If there was one Boxer you would like to see try MMA it would be.........

I know he wrestled in college... I was just trying to explain what level he could have been. Which basically ended his wrestling career. If it wasn't for the knee injury he could have went to Ohio State and seen how far he could go. Instead... he went to a lesser school and basically used his wrestling to get through school. I probably could have worded it better.

Either way... his wrestling wouldn't be world Class... but my point was that he clearly knows how to wrestle... knows the importance of grappling... and would have a great chance to refine his wrestling skills to be strictly a defensive wrestler, and keep the fight on his feet. Sprawl and Brawl.

Wasn't really a question of wording...more a lack of information...but regardless, with his background he'd potentially be a great prospect...and I mentioned him in another thread a while back as such....

 

I figured everyone knew about what he did in college, since we have had several discussions about it on here in regards to threads like this. When you asked the question in the first place, I figured that you meant beyond that common knowledge... which is why I brought up the scholarship to Ohio State that he was offered.... and the knee injury that prevented him from progressing forward (to a better school/better competition, ect..) with his wrestling career.

Huh? I asked if you knew of any first hand sources....i.e. Links to pdf'd wrestling brackets, contemporaneous newspaper articles, a PA equivalent of the Brakeman Report.....

This writer from Philly, who covered him professionally, didn't make note of him wrestling in college while attending Thadeus Stevens or mention a knee injury that ended Big Ten wrestling aspirations...(His bio at Dibella site did not mention a knee injury either)

"Cintron's background as an amateur wrestler is well known, but did you know that he also played football and ran track at William Tennent High School in Warminster, Bucks County, PA. He had the most success in wrestling where he reached the state regional tournament as a junior and senior." Two questions.... is this enough to get a full ride from OSU....Secondly, shouldn't placing at JUCO trump this?

This is why I looking for more solid info, to sort out what's real from embellishment...

 

Obviously his wrestling career wasn't anything extremely glorious. However, he clearly has a solid backround in wrestling. I don't know Kermit personally, and I am not privy to any of his old brackets, bout sheets, rankings from high school, ect.... I am from Ohio... if he lived in Ohio I could give it to you in seconds. I know of websites that provide information on both PA high school, and NJCAA wrestling... however none of them seem to go back that far with their info. I really didn't spend much time searching though.

However, I was under the impression that he didn't wrestle very long in college anyways. Which would mean that he placed 10th at the NJCAA tournament as a freshman which is pretty good. Of course you aren't going to get elite level upper classman comp in NJCAA... but still. Guys with one extra year of college experience have a leg up. Once again... I am not positive about this, that is just what I read before. That by 19 years of age he was boxing full time. Considering that Cintron turned pro in 2000 (after graduating High School in 1998 )... the math seems to work out that way.

It's hard to say what is enough to be offered a scholarship. Coaches know coaches... scouts, ect.... and sometimes they can see potential in some guys to keep growing and getting better. I know several top college wrestlers who weren't that great in High School. Work ethic, natural ability, and willingness to learn play a huge role. Also many offers come with the condition that you must wrestle off others to win it.

However, I sometimes run into Russ Hellickson during summer wrestling camps. If I happen to see him this year... and I remember... I will ask him... and see if he remembers. He would have been the Head Coach at Ohio State at the time.
