if these 2 turned pro???would they be a target to hagler,leonard etc???

hard to tell much at that stage. Even at the professional level, cant imagine them being a match for someone of leonard's class, let alone Marvin Hagler.

 

Frankly mate I know little about the amatuers from that time and really only a little bit about the amateur scene of the last 15 years or so. Im always reluctant to speculate on how guys like this would have went in the pros, as so many have bombed in the past.

 

I think that the the ams was a lot different back then, But the fact is that eastern block fighters are contenders and champions now and if they could of turned pro back then boxing history over the last 30 years would have been a lot different.

 

I remember saying ti my dad when I was a young kid back in the 70's .Why is it that all tghe top fighters are all black, heavier weights in particular. His answer was "wait and see what happens when the communist fighters start turning pro". Well, we're seeing it now.

At first i thought Savchenko looked a bit amateurish (i know that sounds ironic but this is attempted analysis here!), but he settles into the bout and then looks quite decent in the pocket countering with combos. Gomez invests in his right hand from the get go there and it obviously paid dividends. I also noticed his cutting the ring was good, the cuban looked classy there.

Thanks for posting that by the way Dabox, i admit i was a little dismissive at first but give it a go and it was good. Not sure how well they would have done, because the level we're talking with Leonard Hagler etc is proven and we know where they are. But i think its clear both of these guys would have been comfortable operating as proffessionals, only gets better with experience aswell usually.

Im not too much up on the ams to be honest. I think these guys in that vid look pretty decent though.

 

That bout right there takes the setting of a pro fight a bit, rather than land the scoring blowlike it is now.

 

Exactly, that's what i'm getting at. After watching that last Olympics, they're two different sports now.

 

Yeah i thought you meant that. I dont like watching amateur boxing too much now because of how it is. The olympics Khan was in wasnt too bad like, but there were Cubans!

 

I know, it's a shame. I remember watching amateur boxing when it was just like watching the pros and sometimes at a higher level, Hodkinson, john Hyland for example. At the Stadium.
