If Tito hadn't ran into 2 defensive masters, could he have been a great middleweight?

There are not many times in history that one division has had 2 fighters of such immense defensive skill as Bernard Hopkins and Winky Wright.

They both beat Tito Trinidad convincingly.

But they may have been bad stylistic matches for Tito.

After all, he was excellent in stopping WBA champion William Joppy, stopping Ricardo Mayorga (who hadn't been stopped in 11 years) and stopping the underrated Hacine Cherifi.

What do people think, had Trinidad moved to middleweight at a time where these two defensive masters were not present (like now?), could he have been a successful middleweight champion?

I think so. He was awesome against Joppy and was rightly a big favourite to beat Hopkins. Hopkins basically did the same thing to Pavlik recently and Trinidad fought him 7 years ago!

Makes since, plus, instead of DLH vs Hopkins we could have seen Trinidad/De La Hoya II But I think he could have been a good middleweight champion had he not have to face Hopkins and Winky.

Without doubt, Tito would destroy most middleweights who stand and fight, he would have given the likes of hagler and hearns an incredible fight.

he always struggled against boxers because he never came in to a fight with a gameplan, it was always go forward and hit, but when he couldn't hit he found it difficult, that is why he failed against great defensive boxers such as delahoya, hopkins and winky.

If the felix trinidad that knocked out joppy was fighting today, then he would destroy and unify the middleweight division with ease.

Absolutely yes. I think his performance against a solid fighter in Joppy indicates that he would've.

I think he would be successful today and KO most of the Middleweight division. I see Pavlik and Abraham, giving him problems but Tito could beat them as well. I think Abraham would actually be a tougher fight then Pavlik for Tito because he covers up well and is very explosive. I could see a prime Trinidad stopping Pavlik late and maybe getting a close UD over Abraham. However both of these fights could go either way, all 3 fighters are on an elite level in different ways.

GREAT post.........They were also much larger than Tito in the ring just like Roy was.....Tito never lost to a guy who was basically his size, even though the Winky fight was no excuse, he looked TERRIBLE.

And that's why I get PISSED when people mentions Oscar and Tito in the same breath..

Tito DARED to be great, Oscar never really did.......

Fighting Manny Pacquaio is NOT daring to be great
Fighting Floyd Mayweather is NOT daring to be great
Fighting Shane Mosley (2 division jump) was NOT daring to be great.
Fighting Arturo Gatti is NOT daring to be great

He was fighting good fighters who had moved up AT LEAST 2 divisions in their careers to fight him in a division he had been for well over 5 years.

When HE finally fights someone bigger than him (BHOP), the FIX is in, falls from a fake bodyshot and WAAAAAALA (like magic) their business partners:patsch

I think Arthur Abraham would give Tito fits with that tight defense........I could definitely see Tito knocking Kelly Pavlik out and he would crush the Duddy's and Andy Lee's of the world (LOL)

I think Abraham's style of covering up and exploding with powerful counters would give Trinidad a lot of problems. I guess it's just a matter of styles and Abraham versus Trinidad could make for a very exciting fight with the winner being a true mystery in my mind.

EDIT: didn't see your post when I started writing bigtime-skills, but now I know I'm not alone on this.

:rofl Why do people continue to campare Tito's losses with his fight with DLH? He has got 3 boxing lessons as a pro and none came from Oscar IMO, Tito was good but eventually he would have ran into a great boxer sooner or later who was also big and STRONG enough to stand thier ground. Taylor despite his flaws would've been a tough match up for Tito.

I've always thought this too, I think Taylor's size, athleticism and fast strong jab could trouble Trinidad. But after seeing the best and worst of both of them I don't think I would pick Taylor over a prime Trinidad.

I think it's a pick em, honestly, Taylor's size and speed against Tito and his power.

No, he would have been very good but highly flawed.

His lack of middleweight strength, chin and legs would have let him down, plus he had abandoned a lot of the skills he had early as a Welter.

I don't think it would have taken a defensive master to beat him, but with the crapness of the middleweight division in recent years he would have done ok

Against Hearns he'd have a lot better chance. But Hagler? Is that a joke? That's not even a competitive fight.
