I was thinking, since people argue that modern-day fighters have improved and are bigger, stronger, faster, etc, then I guess punch output should be much higher also, right? This is the one thing I can think of that is somewhat measurable between the oldies & today. Are today's modern, super-athlete boxers throwing lots more punches? If not, why isn't that on display along with their advanced power, advanced skills, advanced conditioning, advanced boxing knowledge, advanced speed, etc. Why no advanced punch output?
Because fighters haven’t gotten much better throughout the years the only thing that’s really changed is camera quality and some basic fundamentals.
I don't think fighters have gotten better either, but there's lots of posters here that think they have.
Arreola vs Kownacki broke the compubox record for total HW punches thrown recently, though the quality of those punches were garbage.
Faster sprinters stride at the same rate as slower sprinters at competitive levels. The slow guys of old took as many strides as the guys now, just far less effectively. Anyway, I'm not aware of any studies on punch output per round among world class fighters. As the other poster pointed out, the record for punch output at HW was broken recently.
All you have to do is watch old fights and see how much better they used too be. Fighters today study them to get better FFs
Because when you throw with more power there are more demands on your physiology, I’d expect the further you go back the more you have Calzaghe style punch outputs. A modern day fighter who really throws with power should be throwing less.
They might be better athletes now due to better training methods but that doesn't make you a better fighter. For example Joshua in a fitness test would probably destroy Fury in every test apart from endurance and stamina, faster, stronger, more explosive, jumps higher, etc. But Fury would school him bad, skills and ring IQ trump physical ability alone.
So you're saying that todays fighters throw harder, and this is why they don't throw noticeably more?
Correct, especially considering the punches thrown and landed by the two gentlemen who's record they broke (Ike and Tua).
Come on you guys that always say modern fighters are so much better, how come punch output hasn't visibly increased? Why don't we see much difference in skill level, punching power, speed, accuracy, punch selection, etc.?
Depends on how far back we go. I think most unbiased observers will agree, that boxing skills pre WW1 left a lot to be desired! In my opinion, boxing took a giant leap forward between the two wars. And once we reach the late 30s/early 40s (with Louis, Pep, SRR)... well, I don't really see any noticeable improvement (skill-wise) since then.
I only watch pre 1920s boxing. I don't care much for all these cool new boxers like Rocky Marciano or Mohammad Ali.
