I wasn't sold on the kid, but Sebastian Fundora is looking like a once-in-a-lifetime talent. He has the jab and cross of Hearns and the intense inside/pressure fighting of Paul Williams. He may be the best at 154, and I'm not sure the likes of Ennis, Ortiz, or Xander can beat him. Thoughts!
Hearns goes through him early; wouldn't surprise me if he took him out in 2 rounds, like he did Duran. Hearns was an absolute monster at 154. I'd argue his power carried better here than it did at 147, and he was an ATG puncher at both weights. You could count on one hand the number of 154s in history who potentially could beat Hearns. Fundora is absolutely not one of them. If Brian Mendoza can crumble Fundora, imagine what The Hitman would've done. Not to mention, Hearns was also freakishly tall for 154; he's only a few inches shorter than Fundora, so his outrageous height advantage wouldn't be as effective. Total mismatch.
Tommy struggled against pressure and inside fighters. Fundora does everything Barkey does but is taller, ranger, and a better boxer
First two replies prove how terrible society in general is with their attention span and attention to detail. dead obvious they didnt even read the OP and saw the names hearns and williams and decided to start typing. Didnt even read the TITLE correct. OP didnt ask how Fundora would do against two legends, he said his style reminds him of a hybrid Hearns and Williams. SMFH, ffs. To actually stay on topic OP, I agree. The KO loss helped him develop is long game. He probably had a size advantage complex ( a fear of folks brushing his accomplishments off due to his size advantage? idk ) because up to the Mendoza fight, 90% of his style was fighting on the inside and didnt use his reach advantage well at all. That has definitely changed now. Ennis is imho the most criminally overrated dude out there. Fundora whoops him. Makes it look borderline easy. He isnt even a temu version of roy. probably like 4 classes below him. Low boxing iq, has signs of Mayweather cowardice, and relies on his great but not even special athleticism. I dont think Xander has enough either, Ortiz probably has the best punchers chance but not too condident in that either. I am actually curious if he can bust a hearns and move up quite a bit of weight classes and have success. curious how his frame will fill out and how he'd adjust
How terrible society is because people are having a debate on a boxing forum? That's a reach. Calling him a once-in-a-lifetime talent is him saying that Fundora is up there with the likes of Hearns. It opens up the conversation, and it's incredibly premature. He got flatlined by Brian Mendoza. I know the OP is trying to make stylistic comparisons, but I don't see it.
IMO only Mike McCallum can beat him at the weight; the rest he either outpoints easily or runs them right over. Fundora looks good and could probably beat Ennis and the modern guys, but I just see Tommy throwing murderous body shots on Fundora like he did Shuler (who was also pretty tall) to open up his head for the straight right and that's all she wrote.
Your whole original reply was based on How bad hearns beats his ass. Not once did you mention Fundoras style or how he'd match with current 154s. After I called you out your reply to my post had some elements of the op. whatever bro. go to any forums or the comment section in fb or youtube, its full of people that just read the title and start typing without reading the post or watching the video at all. no point in arguing though, i understand its in human nature to be defensive. I agree with you though, its too early to compare him to ANY great yet let alone Hearns. I do however think he whoops ennis xander and ortiz. lets see how his career unfolds a bit more to see where he really stands
I don't see the comparison honestly. Apart from all 3 fighters being tall and lanky there's no comparison in their styles what so ever. Hearns was a sharp shooter at range with a terrific jab and 1 punch KO power in his right hand. Williams relied on his awkwardness and insane workrate to get the job done. Fundora is also a high workrate fighter that gives up his advantages in height and reach. Hearns never engaged on the inside unless he was forced to aka the Hagler fight. Williams nor Fundora are not even in the same ballpark as Hearns in regards to controlling a fight at range.
Unrelated to the thread but since I noticed you've mentioned being a fan of Tommy and Larry Holmes in the past, what are you thoughts on the comparison of their inside game. Others have pointed out how both relied majorly on control using their long arms, reach, and positioning to get the best of exchanges on the inside, but what is your opinion on the comparison?
I think Holmes showed a better inside game in the 2nd half of his career when his legs had gone. You see Holmes frustrate Mercer when he sat on the ropes on the inside. Even Holyfield said he had difficulty landing on Holmes in their fight. I think Holmes demonstrated better tricks if you will on the inside using his arms having a tricky defence to penetrate. Holmes also had that sneaky uppercut on the inside as he demonstrated when he basically turned the whole fight around vs Weaver.
Witherspoon was another great example of how he turned the fight around when hurt. Where instead of losing his system of control after being stunned, it actually became more pronounced as only then did he use more tricks up his sleeve to get the better of Witherspoon in the exchange. Great fighter Larry, one of my favorites.
