If he'd not moved up to sp Middle after beating McCallum and Hung on for a fight with Hopkins how'd that work out .To much for Toney and a point s loss to BHop ? Or takes one more victory at 160?
Toney didn't hang around middle then his middle hung. But amazing how he could hang with heavyweights.
So this is an alternate future where Toney loved roadwork and had a dietician that put him on a healthy diet that he loved? Toney would probably drub Hopkins ass. In reality however, Toney meeting Hops at MW would be a severely last-minute weightdrained guy meeting a guy who had managed his weight carefully and was ready with a gameplan to smother Toney's brilliance in a sea of jab n hugs if necessary.
One of my dream matchups that never took place. I remember around 2006 talk of them fighting at a catchweight around the Cruiserweight mark but it never happened.
Toney was a couple of classes below Hopkins at the time. Hopkins wins a decision in a fight not nearly as interesting as their names. Close dec. both careers continue in much the way they did. Toney more suited for moving up divisions, Hopkins more suited to remain MW until late career.
Toney carves hopkins up close when Hopkins tries to roughhouse on the inside and counters his lunging right hand with his shoulder roll. Terrible style matchup for Hopkins. I like Hopkins but he loses a competitive UD.
No ,Toney beat mike McCallum in Aug 1992 ,in the following Feb he relinquished his middle weight title . Roy Jones faced Hopkins only 3 months later for Toneys old title .So ,as I said if he'd Hung on a few month s he'd have been in a position to face Bernard . Edit ,lol thought you meant weight classes .My apology s
If Toney had tried to hang out at middleweight any longer he'd have lost his title to someone probably considerably less good than Hopkins. He moved up because he couldn't (or couldn't be arsed) to make weight any more.
One fighter was dedicated to his craft, one wasn't.. All things equal? I'd take Toney. But things are never equal
