If Toney is a great win for Jones than would you consider that James Toney is a great win for Drake Thadzi?

Toney was just coming off of a win over M McCallum just after R Jones had beaten McCallum in what was considered a very good win.

So do you think D Thadzi scored a great win?

I wouldn't call that great win, but it has nothing to do with Thadzi not being a great boxer (if that was what you were going to imply). Toney was out of shape and couldn't even make LHW limit that night... and still made the fight fairly competitive.

I wonder how many people here have actually seen the Toney-Thadzi fight.
I have seen it, and I think it was very close. But the win for Thadzi is ok, as he was just so much more active while Toney was lazy as hell and just coasted for large parts of the fight. Even Freddie Roach implored Toney to do something, but somehow Toney couldn't, he didn't have the energy to do it. Toney just hung by the ropes for much of the fight while Thadzi bullied him. It was evident that Toney was the much better, more skilled fighter as he didn't take many clean shots while he countered Thadzi - but Thadzi just kept coming while Toney tired. It is well known that Toney was terribly out of shape and not focused on boxing at that time, there were even reports he overate the night before the fight. That's why he was too weak to keep Thadzi of him. Freddie Roach said to Toney that he'd need a KO to win this, Toney then tried to stop Thadzi but wasn't able to do it, even after landing some huge right hands.

So, in that regard, yes, it was a great win for Thadzi, considering that Thadzi was a fringe contender while Toney is an ATG. A huge upset even if Toney was miles away from peak form that evening.

it's a similar story with the rjj fight...but that is considered a great win against a "prime" toney for rjj. which i think is what the ts is getting at.

Its a great win for Thadzi, although Toney never really found his "form" at lhw. He was great at mw, smw, cw and competitive at lhw

That is close to what I was thinking. Toney was apparently weak at the weight for both fights. I know Jones gets alot of credit for the win, but Thadzi did it at the higher weight...

i think both wins need to be put into context. was toney better when he fought jones than when he lost to thadzi? yeah, probably. but he wasn't his best.

if the loss to thadzi is seen as a result of poor condition, so should the loss to jones. to be fair bailey, most people put that win into context and say that jones beat a weight drained toney

Toney was out of shape and failed to make weight by 4 or 5 pounds!

He was in shape against Montell Griffin but still lost a close decision to the defensive wizard, that's a great win IMO.

It was just a question as Toney was at a higher weight more suitable to him when he lost to Thadzi
