I think that the Trinidad fight took away a great deal of his confidence. He was then decked by Rivera. Vargas had never been dropped as a pro before that.
I always believed his choice to do steroids was to help him gain some confidence going into the fight he had always ask for DLH.

Im not saying that the Trinidad fight didn't affect him. But it's a lot easier to parry and slip Trinidads punches than it is De La Hoya's. Vargas was never gonna outbox Oscar, who was to fast and to good. His chance was to use his strenght and bully him, and that's what he tried to do.

Yes but that leaves out the part that Vargas was impatient and wanted those fights. He took Campas when he was 14-0 and Tito when he was 20-0. El Feroz gambled big and consequently lost big in the end. That is boxing and no fighter truly knows how many miles their body can take.

Vargas was very proud of his success in the amateurs (he went 100-5 and was the youngest ever U.S. champion two years ago at age 16). He thought that he would be able to achieve that same level of success in the pros regardless of being young.

In 2003, Vargas said "It took me a while to get over it (De La Hoya loss), but I know that I am young, he said. These guys (De La Hoya and Trinidad) stopped me in their prime. I am a guy that gambles because I dare to be great. I don’t ever regret those fights because they made me what I am today".

Vargas was co-managed by Shelly Finkel who was very experienced in the boxing biz. Vargas willingly took those fights he wasn't pushed or mismanaged. Yes, in hindsight the Quartey. Winky and Tito fights were too early, but Vargas wanted it that way.
