Imo, when he was taken in by cus and told he was going to be the next heavy weight champ then the pressure was put on him. He had to be perfect, to be seen as perfect. And when Douglas beat him, suddenly all those doubts and expectations basically screwed with his mind. He never had the mental toughness to survive the loss s. He could, like you say, throw a good punch but hit back and he struggled.

if he'd retired at 25 (massive if) then he'd almost certinaly make an aborted comeback after he'd spent all his money.

lol retiring at 25, just writing that is wierd. If you are even considering that, theres something fundamentally wrong with your life.

yeah, it wasn't that he couldn't take a punch, his chin was solid as they come. It was the doubt that someone was hitting him back. I suppose really he was a bully in some ways

Don't forget Herol, tyson s life was far from your everyday blokes. Back then in 88 /89 he had so much crap going on in his life it must have royally screwed his mind up. The break up of the Jacob s, Cayton, rooney partnership, givens takin him for as much as possible, don king tapping away on his shoulder. His every movement and action on public display. The mental mind issues he had that Birmingham and I have been talking about. Those million s in the bank wouldn't have been much use if you feel like topping yourself. He actually said after spinks, that he was retiring. Obviously he didn't but must have been in his mind.

I don't know how people would view him...It would make absolutely no sense for Tyson to retire after the first Bruno fight....

I was there. The hype on Tyson was unreal. He was unbeatable. I can remember my dad actually talking about letting opponents bring a knife or gun into the ring. In retrospect his drugs, loss of Cus and Rooney, and all his personal demons were eating away at him. I truly believe all those things did him in more than anything.

Had he had a career ending injury or something at that point, many would have viewed him as possibly the goat. I cannot explain how invincible he seemed. In this day and age of social media i cant imagine how it would have been.

The fact that he is a national icon even after such a downfall is a testament to how high his peak was.
