If Mike Tyson had never even put on a pair of gloves? And yet the heavyweight tournament still takes place in 86, obviously Berbick, Smith and probably tucker..which fighter takes the top shot? . With no Tyson other boxers will be included in the unification bouts. And what happens between the years 87 to 90 when Holyfield comes in to play? And where do Holmes and spinks fit in to this other reality?
I would like Tucker to win the tournament, though of course there would have been the issue of the hand problem. In that scenario there would definitely have been pressure for a Spinks Tucker unification fight, and Spinks would probably have wanted the pay day. Regardless of who emerged on top of the tournament, I think that we would have seen the title change hands a few times. Tyson ends up in prison or dead, and nobody knows or cares.
Frank Bruno becomes 'the baddest man on the planet' and dominates the heavyweight scene for 5 years. It would be brutal. Well... Wladimir Klitschko fans live in cloud cuckoo land, so why can't I?
Without Tyson around maybe King would have put his hopes on Witherspoon. A motivated Witherspoon would have beaten Smith and would have been favoured to win the whole thing. Berbick would have had a rematch against Thomas who I think was already in decline in 86.Spinks without Tyson around might have even kept his title instead of giving it up and defended against the overrated Tucker.
Witherspoon could, if he gets motivated and stay s in shape actually make a impact in the tyson void. Off course its a big if. Even though tucker was slightly over rated, I believe spinks was even more so. I think tucker defeat s him by unanimous decision. So in my opinion, it comes down to spoon and tucker with a fit witherspoon defeating him by a wide margin. Then you also have Bruno, Biggs and possibly a comeback Holmes all getting thrown into the mix. And does douglas still get in there?
Bruno definitely has more of a chance, which ever guy who ends up unified champion would fight him at some point. Depending on who's the main man at the moment, brunos goin to have more of a shot.
No,Douglas he would never have been as motivated and as good as he was without Tyson. As for Tucker what was his best win after the Tyson fight?
There wasn't one, a good showing against Lewis that s it. But with no Tyson he's in a different place.
I agree he's a little over rated, but spinks is to. Yep he defeats Holmes twice, one a dubious Dec, then Tangstad who bugner would have kod, and finally Cooney, who hardly broke a sweat before collapsing. And if we go by tucker and spinks effort s against Tyson.. Well you have to give Tony credit there. Spinks was a great lght heavy and a very good heavy.
Anyway, with King once again in charge of the heavyweights and no dominant champ like Tyson around, I can see the title being split up again after unification and the usual suspects like Tubbs, Page and maybe the returning Dokes being thrown back into the mix.
There were a few heavyweights around who might have been able to beat Spinks, and Tucker was just one of them. At the same time you wouldn't exactly make any of them prohibitive favorites over him. Spinks might also simply have retired, and taken the lineage with him. Douglas was only the #7 ranked contender when Tyson fought him, so it is not certain that he would even have fought for the title in this timeline. If some sort of lineage continues, then I see at least two or three additional lineal champions, though I could not say who they would be.
