Rewatched a few of AJ's fights recently, small guys like Povetkin who will have weighed less than Usyk will weigh tomorrow was able to put AJ on the back foot with his sharp combos. Povetkin is no where near Usyk in terms of skill or stamina. AJ is plodding on his back foot and his defence isn't that great. He also wont be able to hold Usyk easily like he could with Ruiz, because Usyk's footwork/speed will have him bouncing out of range. Ruiz whilst having fast hands, had slow feet. If Usyk can feint Joshua into fighting on the back foot, it will be a long night for AJ and he will get a slow beat down. I actually have Usyk as the clear favourite now after rewatching a lot of fights.
It's not that easy though. Usyk isn't a pressure fighter in his nature. He can pressure and bully fighters like he did it with Bellew in the second half of that fight after losing the early rounds but that was at CW. Pressuring CWs and HWs is a different kind of thing. Povetkin and Ruiz are pressure fighters. They like to come forward with a high guard. Usyk vs. Joshua will be more like a chess match. Usyk will try to land his jab to the body a lot i assume and he will try to set some traps to counter with the straight left. Joshua hasn't faced a lot of good southpaws in his pro career. He actually hasn't fought any good southpaw at all if we exclude King Charles who isn't bad but nowhere near the level of Usyk in terms of accuracy, speed and skills. Joshua on the other hand will definitely use his jab like never before. I wouldn't be shocked to see Joshua just pumping out the jab without throwing a lot of right hands afterwards. I don't think we're in for a spectacular fight at all. I think both guys will approach the fight in a very technical way and also with some patience. I don't see many wild exchanges in close range. I have to favor the bigger and taller guy here with more power. But Usyk is obviously live and can pull off an upset but he really needs to be sharp with his defense. He got hit a bit too much both against Chisora and Whiterspoon early on. Joshua isn't a great boxer and isn't as skilled as Usyk but he's a big hitter and one punch can end the fight. If you actually rewatch Usyk vs. Chisora you can see that Usyk was definitely rocked by some of those early attacks from Delboy. Not a great sign if you ask me.
No, his best versions were in - out fighter who had rapid angles change, very mobile dynamic high guard and better footwork than his opponents had. Plus Povetkin not at all was just converted into a pro am boxer: he was converted into am boxer am kickboxer who then did not had fought for points ( mainly ) and only later was a pro boxer. Dudes like Ruiz and Briedis ( sorry hardcore Usyk fans ) counterpunch better than Usyk too.
I do, punch opponent don't let him punch you back. simple. If you can't do that just pay off a judge.
