....which now seems a possibility, since the Ukranian government has released him and Loma to fight just as Joshua is announcing a "big announcement coming", who should Usyk fight in the interim? We will assume Fury will not be available, as he is talking retirement, and in any event, Joshua will not sign off on it. Whyte will be coming off a defeat (I believe). I would assume that Usyk will fight a mando, which would be Parker or Joyce for the WBO, or Bryan, Hunter or Helenius for the WBA. Of that bunch, I would like Parker, who has the credibility of being a former titlist. The WBA list does nothing for me. Ruiz, Wilder and Ortiz seem like other credible choices. But you do you think that he should fight, barring Fury?
Fury is the only fight for him. Usyk doesn't have time to drop down in level at 35 years old. Wilder just suffered back to back KO's and is likely finished. Usyk has smashed Hunter to pieces already. Usyk made pretty easy work of Joyce in WSB while he hadn't filled out his HW frame. Parker, Ruiz, Ortiz do nothing for him. Joshua rematch barely does anything for him. I think he should wait until Fury-Whyte is concluded and face the winner to attempt to go undisputed.
This is predicated on the idea that Fury might retire, which he has been taking about. Besides, I disagree a bit. The great fighters that go undefeated, like Floyd or Calzhage, generally go to 38 or so. The war is a big distraction, but, especially given the crappola of the heavyweight division not, Usyk could easily come back and have another 3-4 good years. Let's not rush Oleksandr.
Easy tune up fight, as he has to face AJ after that. So a big guy similar to AJ style and size, but not a hars one. Fury fight can't happen before AJ. Fury has his chances, but decide to duck Usyk.
Going with Helenius. He has earnt a WBA title shot. Personally I thought Kownacki was overated. But the American magazine Ring had him top 10, and the WBA made the fight between him and Helenius an eliminator. After upsetting the apple cart, Helenius had to beat Kownacki a second time. No one else deserves a title shot on that list at the moment.
Hearn thinks he's spotted an opening - Usyk's eye off the ball in terms of prep for the rematch, and all that. Except, sometimes people go training with the military to toughen up before some form of physical challenge. Usyk's gone a few stages further by actually facing the prospect of live rounds and brandishing an assault rifle. Plus he'll be boxing for a nation's pride. Rather face an AJ than an AK...
Jesus that feels like a short turnaround for Usyk when you consider what he's gone through. Won't be able to train in the Ukraine like he always does. Possibly won't be able to train with Papachenko. He's definitely facing an uphill battle here.
I'm certain that any potential for him to return would have to be 100 per cent ruled out on paper before they sign to fight anyone else
Well... as I said, he fought his eliminator against a ranked contender in Kownacki, twice. Add to that, the WBA is next in line. And apart from Parker's recent win against Chisora, none of the others have done anything of note So, whilst Helenius might be an unfashionable pick. He is the only one who deserves a shot atm
