Just saw they officially signed on ESPN.(Don't get your hopes up though, vitali has a history of postponing fights right before the fights about to take place.) Anyway, if vitali beats sam peter coming off a 4 year layoff, this will be impressive considering this will be the FIRST young ranked hopefully in shape contender vitali would have on his resume. If vitali beats sam peter he moves into my top 50 heavyweights of all time list. I dont see him winning though. But it will be a great win considering the 4 year layoff.

Thats another 20 page thread, I think this will be my last post in this 1 Q, I'll leave you to upset Mendoza who will proceed to copy and paste his 5000 word essay of why Vitali is the prettest of HW of all time

You're right that it would be the first young, in-shape contender on Vitali's resume.

It all comes down to Peter's performance though...Vitali's, too. If Peter looks mediocre and Vitali barely squeaks past him, it won't do much to help his standing.

95% chance we won't see this fight, by the way. Vitali is too scared/proud to come in at anything less than 100%, but the sad truth is that 100% is damn near impossible for him after all this time and all these injuries and delays.

I am not sure about this fight Peter looked so bad against Mcline that this may not rate as a good win for Vitali even if he does win.

I give him a good shot, I don't think much of Peter ,or most of the other heavies ,truth be told, the latest Ring magazine,[uk],goes in to detail about how poor todays big guys are ,I agree with them.Wlad is currently the best of a bad bunch ,when the likes of Ruiz and Maskaev are still credible opponents, the division is in trouble.I haven't seen Tony Thompson yet ,but he seems to be someone nobody is anxious to meet.

vitaly is one of those fighters whos ability does not match standing in history.

his resume, as often the case with fighters fighting today, totally lacks depth.

his best win was probably over a fat kirk johnoson.

but the ability he showed in his defeats and in other fights would probably favour him over most fighters ranked in the top 50 heavyweights of all time were he to meet them head to head.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

For weeks, the handlers of heavyweight titleholder Samuel Peter and oft-injured unretiring former titleholder Vitali Klitschko have been negotiating their mandatory fight under the deadline pressure of a looming purse bid. When the sides couldn't reach an agreement, the camps converged Thursday on WBC headquarters in Mexico City prepared for the auction.

Klitschko manager Shelly Finkel, for example, held out hope that they could make a deal Wednesday night, but when they couldn't, he left New York for Mexico on a 1:30 a.m. Thursday flight.

Finally, moments before the scheduled bid, Peter promoter Dino Duva, Finkel, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions and Don King, a partner in Duva's promotional company, announced that they reached an agreement on a co-promotion, thus avoiding a purse bid that could have seen control of the fight go to an outsider with the highest bid, such as Ahmet Öner, the CEO of German promotional company Arena, who was in Mexico City intending to make an offer.

One critical aspect of the deal they made will allow Peter to take an interim title defense as long as it takes place by the end of July.

"We will work together to maximize the revenue," Duva told ESPN.com. "Sometimes the psychology of there being a purse bid and a deadline is what it takes for people to finally make a deal. That's what happened here. We're very happy with the deal. I believe we made the best deal."

Duva Boxing will be the lead promoter of the event in conjunction with Klitschko's company, K2. Specific terms were not released but the Peter side will get slightly more than 50 percent of the revenue, Duva said.

"I'm relieved. I was hoping we could have gotten this done sooner but I thought once we got here we could get it done without a bid," said Finkel, who was with Duva on the way to the airport after they made the deal.

Although no specific date has been determined, Duva said the fight most likely will take place on either Oct. 4 or Oct. 11.

And where will it take place?

"We're going out there to find the best deal possible," he said. "It can be at any point of the globe."

With Klitschko's popularity in Germany, that is a possible site.

There is no U.S. television deal in place either, although HBO and Showtime both figure to have interest.

Duva said he would prefer to go on Showtime.

"I would prefer for it to go on Showtime," he said. "My heart is with Showtime. I mean that 100 percent because they have always been there to support Sam."

Peter (30-1, 23 KOs), the heavy-punching native of Nigeria living in Las Vegas, won his title on HBO on March 8 by scoring a sixth-round knockout of Oleg Maskaev in Cancun, Mexico, a fight that was originally ticketed for Showtime until an injury to Maskaev forced it to be postponed.

Besides the financial terms, the Klitschko camp agreeing to allow Peter to take an interim title defense this summer was a deal-breaker.

"I'm nervous about it, but in the overall picture it was the best thing for us to do," Finkel said.

Duva said he intends to put an interim fight together for Peter.

"We will pursue an interim bout in July," Duva said. "The Klitschko side allowed us to do an interim bout if it could happen by the end of July, which was important to us. It's not guaranteed but we will try. Sam would like to fight in July. He would not be happy waiting until October to fight."

Duva mentioned such fringe contenders as Donnell Holmes, Carl Davis Drummond and J.D. Chapman as potential opponents.

King is pushing one of his fighters, faded 40-year-old Andrew Golota, who is 0-3-1 in world title bouts, including two first-round knockouts.

"If we do an interim bout it will not be for huge money," Duva said. "I want to give Sam the best situation. The Klitschko bout will be three months later and I don't want to put that at risk."

Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), the older brother of unified titleholder Wladimir Klitschko, is running for mayor of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, where Klitschko is from. The election is May 25, but he has said he will fight for the title regardless of the outcome of the election.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's firm, Giuliani Partners, announced Wednesday that it is advising Klitschko in his bid against incumbent mayor Oleksandr Omelchenk.

Am I the only one who is cynical about this fight ever taking place? Vitali is running for political office and all this fight hype might be intended to get him free publicity. If he wins, forget duking it out with Sam Peter. He will set his sights on eventually becoming president of the Ukraine.

I hope the fight does not come off. Even if he makes it into the ring injury-free, he has inevitably lost a lot since his last fight and will probably look bad. His style relies a lot on reflexes, speed and athletic ability. This has diminished a lot now that he is 37. And even if he wins, it will only mean that the WBC title will be held hostage for another year because he'll probably suffer more injuries.

Ideally he runs for mayor of Kiev and let's his brother solve the WBC belt in 2009 after Thompson and Povetkin.

I liked to watch Vitali, but at this time he is not likely to add much to the division.

My Euro press source ( PM me if you want in on it ) said says Vitlai was looking good in preparation for McCline. The big fighters with jabs and power don't ( Lewis, or Foreman ) rely as much on speed as other heavies do. They age a bit better style wise.

Don King has the WBC belt. He is not going to risk it vs either Klitshcko. King will only risk the WBC belt vs a person he has option on. This much I am sure of.

While I understand why some don't want Vitlai back, consider this. The heavyweight division could always use more talent. I think Vitlai vs Peter is the fight the fans want to see. Its got far more interest than Wlad vs Thompson, or Chagaev vs Valuev. We know Vitlai vs Peter is going to be a war! See my point?

As for the belts being held hostage, that is nothing new. Maskeav had a weak defense before meeting Peter. Chagaev had a weak defense vs Skelton, before a delayed re-match with Valuev. And the beat goes on... Wlad has pretty much cleaned out the division already. What we need now is to see some big fights, then give the young up and coming people like Povetkin or Haye a chance vs Wlad.

Wlad has already beaten Peter, Ibragimov, Brewster, Brock, Byrd and McCline. I think he has pretty much cleaned out the divison. The only world class proven champion he has not fought is Chageav.

I do not think Thompson, Valuev, Povetkin or Dimitrenko are better than the above names Wlad has already beaten.

If Wlad beats #9 Ring Magazine rated Thompson as expected, there will always be an up and coming fighter to take his place. How many former top ten fighters has Wlad knocked out of the top ten? Quite a few.

Valuev has improved dramatically since 2005 and is 7'0 325lb. He is 48-1 former champion who lost his title on a close decision but is rematching chagaev. I think he beats ruslan, and valuev is a serios threat to wlad. He just shutout good boxer former champ Segei Liak.

Potvekin is a rising star olympic gold medalist who just won the IBF elimination tourney. for some reason, wlad turned him down so he could take on a 37 year old B level fighter tony thompson. Potevekin with his handspeed, boxing skills, workrate is a huge threat to wlad.

Thompson is a joke of a fighter, why wlad took this fight I will never know. But Valeuv, Virchis, Potvekin, Dimitrenko are defintley better than the above names.......These guys pose serious threats to wlad. Wlad better beats these guys if he wants a strong legacy
