He gets a lot of credit for it. Vitali is coming off a 4 year lay-off with serious injuries, if he's able to pull it off then that's one hell of an accomplishment. Peter is a very good opponent and #2 Heavyweight right now. Won't rate him as the best after that win so the second poll option is my pick, the best is to be determined soon as Wladimir continues to try and unify.
Don't think he's a **** champion, he never got the chance to prove how good of a champion he's going to be all because of serious injuries that forced him to leave. Last I remember when he beat Sanders he took on Danny Williams late in the same year and was set to fight Rahman only four months after that. He was planning to stay active and bring some action to the division but his injuries failed him. Even when the Rahman fight was postponed and Rahman had to fight Barrett instead he came asked for James Toney so he could have a stay-active fight before Rahman gets in there with Barrett. Point is he was planning to stay active and bring some much needed good fights to the division but his injuries is what put a stop to it all. Then again right now he might be a **** champion if he wins, he already openly stated that he wants to accomplish his dream by being champions both him and his brother at the same time and retire after it. Not good for the division unless he plans to stay active and bring on some of the fights we didn't get to see before.
That'd certainly be an unprecedented accomplishment in the heavyweight division. I'd go as far as to say a Vitali win will make boxing history, as far as what can be accomplished by an idle former champion.
Has he said anything directly about his plans after this fight? I know hes old and wont be around forever but I hope he has 2-3 more fights after the Peter fight.
Very possible, I would honestly say he made history if he does. First of all they are going to be the first brothers to BOTH be champions in the division and he will win this fight after a 4 year lay-off with career threatening injuries against a solid legitimate challenge/threat.
Before he made his come-back he said something about planning to return to get grab a title then retire again just to accomplish a long-time dream of his and his brother's and retire after it. This all started when he was rumored to be calling out Maskaev for a title shot back when Maskaev had the title.
Yeah I know where you're getting at, just saying that his intentions were very good and it wasn't a personal choice to retire, serious injuries forced him to leave and he can't be blamed or hated for that.
As I see it, if he beats Peter, his legacy goes up substantially. To come off a 4 year layoff and beat the guy generally considered to be the second best fighter in the division outside of his brother is something that has not often been done.
I can't find an appropriate choice in there. I would say "Impressive and maybe the best but we won't know it"
Vitali should win this fight. peter's is a one demensional fighter who does not have any movement and just stands right infront of you. If peter can not move side to side and get angles you can bet his face is going to be a bloody mess.
