Both would be considered top ten heavyweights by many, seeing as how they're in a select fews top 15's right now. Both of their losses are devastating, making many doubt the intangibles of each fighter. For Vitali, heart, and coming up short when it mattered most for whatever reason. Wladimir, his chin/stamina betraying him. Take away those weaknesses, plus the mythical quality of the 0, and I think they'd be considered by more then half of boxing fans to be top ten material.
From what I know there's only a handful if that of posters on classic that don't have Rocky in there top ten. Some have him number 1-4, actually.
Again, I'd bet 90%, literally, of the posters here have him in their top ten. Dempsey is somebody who misses out on top ten lists more then Marciano.
i wouldnt say 90% thats a little high maybe 50% i do agree that both of the Klits would pop in in some peoples top tens , possibly more so in the general forum
Yep. And imagine if Lewis never lost (Although that would ultimately test the fact he was never tested, or never showed redemption). You could say this for so many cases with fighters.
If Dempsey never lost and fought all the black contenders too, he'd be a top five. Also, if Chuvalo were lightning fast and never lost, beating Frazier, Ali and Foreman, he'd be the GOAT, on most lists, I bet.
No, guys. It's different this time. It's not the same. If Holyfield never lost, he'd be the greatest heavyweight of all time. But he did lose. So unfortunately, he doesn't get the credit he deserves as an unbeaten heavyweight. Because he lost. Which complicates things.
Avoiding black contenders is a bit different from sustaining a "freak" facial injury and another "fluke" injury. Thanks for the awesome post though, relevant stuff. :-(
Give it some time. 20 years from now, boxing fans, if the sport can attract them will have less of a romanticism attached to old time fighters per 1960. I think both K bros are in the top 20 right now.
If Vitali never lost he would have wins against the two best heavies of the late 90s/00s in Byrd and Lewis..so you could make a great case. But he didn't and as is, he's just a successful belt holder with a solid but not great resume. About on the same tier as Ruiz. Wlad is already creeping into some top 20s which is impressive for a modern heavyweight that is still active and in the middle of his reign.
