How would the history of the heavyweight era have changed if Walcott had gotten the nod in his first fight with Louis?

    Perhaps surprisingly little.

Walcott would likely have given Louis an immediate rematch, which Louis would presumably have won as he did with the actual rematch.

Louis becomes the first champion to regain the title then retires.

Everything from there goes as was.

Except it would've increased Walcott's legacy and resume. That might be the only difference.

Louis wouldn't have retired. He was fighting at that late date to try to pay off his taxes. He would have kept fighting until he knew he was washed up.

Joe Louis would have beaten Floyd Patterson in becoming the first man to regain the title. He would have stopped Jersey Joe in the rematch,as in real time, and retired.

Although a day before his 34th birthday, Louis was past prime and an old 34. A loss would've been regarded pretty much the same as Marciano's win over him. It wasn't the best Louis.

Louis stops Walcott in the rematch, and then retires.

Disagree. Louis no longer holds the the record for consecutive title defenses. His legacy drops a bit.

I think Walcott won the first fight based on those who were there and the surviving audio and video which includes two knock downs and a loud chorus of boos once the decision was announced.

I don't think anyone has broken 23 so he would still have the record.
