I think Ward has had stiffer competition, and excelled at it, than Mayweather and Pacquiao in the last year. He beats Dawson decisively and he could make a case for being #1 P4P. Martinez beats Chavez and hes around there two. Still after Ward though as Dawson is proven and Chavez has question marks around his weight and tests.
I see what you're saying there. It makes sense, too. I had always believed Ward would win because of: * Ward's higher ring IQ * Chad's mental lapses However, I really think Scully has a unique connection with Chad. Dawson really impressed me against Hopkins. In the early middle rounds, Hopkins was getting in Chad's head. He was being Hopkins, and it started working. Iceman quickly got him on track, and he remained more focused throughout an entire 12 rounds than I recall seeing him in some time. Chad wanted to make this fight to the point he was willing to drop to '68 and concede every advantage to Ward. This, combined with the fact Ward once admitted to me in an interview that it took him 5 or 6 rounds in order to make his adjustment against Bika got me thinking.... One of my reasons for believing Chad would lose, may have been remedied. I believe Scully can and will keep Chad focused. The question of weight? That could be a legitimate concern. For now, I'm taking Chad and Iceman at face value. I'm assuming this will not be a major issue, and I never felt weight (168, 175, or in between) would have determined the winner in this particular contest. I think it's very close. But if Chad can operate the way he did against Hopkins and Scully keeps him focused (both of which I believe will happen), I think he takes it - even with Ward having the better ring IQ. A Ward win would not surprise me, however. In fact, a dominating win for Ward where my prediction is far from the mark would not surprise me, either. All of this said, I'm going with Chad. I think Ward will find him a tricky puzzle for too long, and that he will dig himself in a hole. I'm seeing something like a SD: 115-113 x2, 112-116. :smoke
Not .. whoever.. If the Black Goofy wins, then people will just say it proves nothing because he just won on being bigger. And I will tend to agree. If Ward wins.. it will be a nice win though.
I already have Ward #3 P4P. I don't get why Martinez and Donaire get ranked above him. Winning the Super 6 was bigger than anything either of them have done, and his resume is just as good as either of theirs.
Also, in the spirit of this thread, I think it's interesting to consider what might happen to Dawson in a P4P sense should he beat Ward, despite moving down to 168 and traveling to hostile territory in Oakland.
Bigger, but fighting at a weight he last made over six and a half years ago. Ward put himself in a lose-lose situation. Once Froch bludgeoned Bute, Ward should have just moved up. There was nothing left at 168, and he would receive more credit in victory.
Maybe he can fight the way against Hopkins but even so, Hopkins was merely trying to spoil his way to a win while being very limited offensively, it's almost like I was watching a fight between "who wanted to win less" and that was Hopkins all night. Ward has never been afraid to let his hands go and isn't really in danger of being KO'd either, when was the last time Dawson stopped a fighter? Unless Scully transforms Dawson into an offensive machine during camp I'm struggling to see Dawson win more than a few rounds. we'll see though, I'm just hoping for a good fight. Haven't had one from Chad since Pascal tried lighting a fire under his ass :yep
How? What has Baby Chavez ever done to be considered a tougher opponent than Chad Dawson? Beat up on Andy Lee and Peter Manfrado?
It's a styles thing. Dawson has nothing for Ward. Chavez has a huge size advantage and Martinez is almost 40 and has struggled in his last 2. What are the odds for these fights. Should tell you what you need to know about the perceptions. Ward is around 4-1 right now
Makes sense... EDIT: But I will say this - Chavez has absolute S H I T as far as boxing ability is concerned whereas Dawson is a complete fighter - in a technical sense... Second EDIT: One other thing - the odds sometimes don't reflect how competitive a fight is going to be. What were the odds on Pacquiao JMM III? We all saw how that turned out.
