If Ward goes southpaw on Kovalev, it could get intertesting

A few weeks ago I made a post pessimistic about ward getting around Kovo's long jab and Ward lacking the power to keep Kovo off him.

I found an old video of Ward showing a lot of Power with the straight left while fighting southpaw. Yes it was a bum, but you can see the difference in power, being that ward is a natural lefty

Can he pull a Terrance Crawford and patting down Kovos jab with his right glove and countering with his left hook?

Go to the 9:34 mark (3rd round)

Here's also a clip of Ward hitting the heavy bag while in the southpaw stance. This is also recently in 2015

Let's just keep it ****ytical and leave the trolling a lone. I'm trying to make some money on this fight so let's talk like regular people and not fan boys.

Ward will need to take Kovalev to the distance and stay inside so that he can keep Kovalev from using his power jab.

Kovalev will need to hit Ward before he can get close and clinch and keep his inside uppercut crisp to catch Ward before he will start a tussle. If they start tussling, Ward will start to wear down Kovalev by the 6th round.

I like both fighters and I really hope this fight happens.

What's Kovo's ring weight the night of the fight? I'm not sure Ward will be able to hold him. Kovo didn't let Bhop get away with it.

Andre Ward used to be between 175 and 177 on fights nights at 168.
I don't know now because he hasn't fought in years at a proper weight class.

Yup, kovalev is usually around 188, recent few years. I could see him coming in either lighter or heavier once wards "forced" to fight him..

Speed vs extra size for wearing the wrestler out

I don't think it matters much if Ward switches stance. Kovalev has dealt with 3 southpaws (Campillo, Agnew and Caparello) in brutally efficient manner.

Kovalev has weapons for both type of fighters. His left jab to the body, and straight right hands has been incredibly effective against southpaws. I think his left jab to body will be effective against Ward. Afterall, he did knocked Agnew & Caparello down with that power jab to the body.

Going southpaw on Kessler in the early rounds was very effective for Ward. Kessler had no clue what to do. For a while he even stopped punching. Some of these fighters from the UK , Denmark etc are way too stiff and just simple quick boxing skills can throw off their gameplan. Most of them are one dimensional. The Russian and other fighters from old Soviet states are talented though. Kazak, Uzbek, Belarus etc.

I recall Virgil Hunter saying that when the training camp starts he advises his guys to never be more than 10 pounds over the weight class you fight in. That means they need to watch their weight when they aren't fighting. But eating at the Olive Garden can get fattening with all that bread, cheese and tomato sauce.

I think there is more chance of Micky Ward facing Kovalev than Andre Ward.

Interesting indeed, but with the lack of power in Ward's right, I see Kova walking straight through his southpaw jab.

That said, the way he stepped inside Dawson when in opposing stances was extremely impressive.

Cedric Agnew was a southpaw. Broken ribs and knocked out.

had Dawson not been severely weight drained and had proper use of his legs, it would have been much more difficult for Ward to get closer to Dawson
