We are acustomed to comparing fighters from diferent eras by their weight, height and tale of the tape which dont tell the whole story.

If we could get fighters from diferent eras to stand next to each other I suspect we would get a few shocks.

    I will suggest a few-

    Barbados Joe Walcott
147 lbs can go a long way in a 5' 1'' frame. If you stood him next to contemporary fighters he would look like a tank next to other welterweights. Esentialy a stunted light heavyweight.

    Joe Louis and Muhamad Ali
I will chance a small wager that if you put these guys next to Hasim Ramhan or Lennox Lewis they would not look like small heavyweights.

    Jim Jeffries
Put him next to the Lennox Lewis who fought Frank Bruno and he would apear to be the larger man. Lewis would look like a stick next to him.

You really think Jeffries would look that big?

He was around 220 pounds, consistently, wasn't he? So, Lennox a stick?

I was recently looking at a picture of Lennox standing next to Frank Bruno when he himself was not much more than 220.

I can imagine that Jeffries might look like a tank next to that Lewis.

    Lets create the picture.

Lennox Lewis was 229 lbs when he fought Bruno and 6' 5''. Bruno looked by far the bigger man.

Jeffries at his peak was 6' 1'' and a ripped 220 lbs.

    Superimpose the images.

This is a similar point to the one I made recently on a Lewis thread.

Mercer did not look, nor fight, small compared to Lewis.

Mercer is a relatively small-framed, out of shape tubster - certainly compared to Ali and Liston, and to some extent compared to Louis too.

    Sure.

I recently looked at a picture of him next to Frank Bruno (early in his career) and superimposed Jim Jeffries in place of Bruno.

I think that even when he was 245 Jeffries would have been visibly wider and would have had a larger head.

You have to remember that Bruno is a huge man himself. You can't expect Jeffries to look as big as he does; Bruno was a ripped 6'3" 247lbs. And what's the point of taking Lewis at a time when he hadn't matured in his frame yet and compare that to Jeffries?

In fact, what's the point at all? Jeffries at 6'2" (or 6'1") 220lbs was plenty big. He'd look a be bit smaller compared to Lewis, but who wouldn't?

Bruno had about a 50" chest, didn't he?
I mean really, there's not a lot of guys going to look physically as muscular and large as him. Taller maybe but not as solid...that's a pretty big stat.

Still, if someone could get it scaled exactly right it could be fun. For those popular Byrd-Ali debates.

Size is important when the boxer with a size advantage knows how to use it.

Lennox filled out a LOT over the years, weight/frame wise.

The Lewis that boxed Bruno in Cardiff was skinny.. drawn at the weight and very under muscled compared to say the Lewis that evolved and boxed Morrison or Mercer..
hen Manny got hold of LL the first thing they did was add 30 pounds.. He was a whole different fighter.. I spent a lot of time around Lewis in the late 80's and until the Bruno fight.. He was very slim and looked like a tall cruiserweight.. I followed him for a lot of fights later and sat with him at a celebration dinner for Dick Saddler and Doc Broadus in the Tropicana las vegas 1995.. He was huge , he had jsut beaten Morrison and was wearing a silk shirt , his waste was bursting out of the monickered shirt he was rock solid 250 and not the same cat i knew from 1990.. I get what the guy was saying about Jeffreys .. Jim was a thick set man by nature and was a whole lot shorter than the Lewis who faced big Frank..

    God Bless..

Oh by the way... I would love to have seen Jack Johnson alongside say Riddick Bowe.. what a trip.. Jack was way ahead of his time.. but Riddick was one of the first major league Super large heavyweights..

Hurricane Carter and Marvin Hagler. Both were built like middleweight Mike Tysons, I would just want to see who was more muscular.

Also Ron Lyle and Mike Weaver, again, to see who looked more muscular.

The other day I downloaded the Lewis/Morrison match and was surprised how much bigger Lewis was and Morrison was six feet 220 or thereabouts and solidly built to boot. That version of Lennox would look considerably larger than Jeffries who was roughly the same size as Morrison. He would dwarf Louis and make Marciano look like a welterweight as he would Charles, Walcott and Patterson. This guy was huge!!

I think the old timers would be 5-10 pound heavier if they fought today. Morrison says he was on jucie. Lewis is a huge man.
