We can’t forget GGG fought Canelo at 35, Hagler was done at 32 (and already a shadow of what he was)
Canelo was bang in his prime.
If they’d both been 27, well for a start Canelo wouldn’t fight him, but we wouldn’t see the slow hesitant GGG that we saw, he was a different animal in his prime

To answer the OP, I wouldn’t put GGG no1, I think he’s done very dirty by many though, compared to Usyk for example

GGG was 34 for Jacobs, 35 for Canelo. He still arguably beat Canelo (I thought he did , the first time )
Canelo couldn’t do anything with him even when he was 40.

Reading back through the thread there doesn’t seem much recognition of his age.
    Hagler was done at 32
    Monzón was done at 34
It wasn’t GGG’s fault that he only fought the best fighters when he was old, he was the most avoided fighter of his generation.

GGG had everything, he was plenty fast in his prime, hit ridiculously hard, cut the ring off as well as anyone, had a fantastic jab, ATG chin, longevity, wicked body puncher.
Canelo would never have beaten him in his prime

I think a lot of fans detract too much from a boxer when they struggle past their prime. Robinson was a win a few, lose a few guy for a long time past his prime, Duran as well. They can’t go on the same being world beaters for ever..

GGG is definitely a top 10 at middle, probably closer to top 5, there’s not many would be certain to beat him that’s for sure

I’d assume you have Toney as one of those who you have in mind, if Dave Tiberi could…

Guys have off nights, and guys also just have competitive fights at the top level, Jacobs was top level, so was Derevyanchenko, and Golovkin was past his best against the latter, he was against Canelo even in the 1st fight, and still won clearly on my card, all 3 of those were better than Tiberi, Derevyanchenko may be debatable though.

Hopkins was 168/169lbs on fight night vs Taylor. Nearer to his MW prime, he was 166lbs vs Echols, who was 163lbs himself - https://basementgymboxing.blogspot.com/2014/08/bernard-hopkins-weight-with.html?m=1

I don't have a source, but I've read Monzon was around 168lbs on fight night.

Monzon wasn’t regaining 8lbs in one afternoon…Hopkins is smaller then I expected though, looks much bigger then that, I always thought he was a weight bully 175lber type lol.

    Perhaps, perhaps not.

Either way, there will have been fighters who stepped in the ring >8lbs heavier than they weighed in, during same day weigh ins, though. I'm typically 3lbs heavier at night than in the morning. If I dehydrated to the extreme to make weight (we know fighters did this, it's the reason weigh ins were moved to the day before), took on no fluids or food before a lunchtime weigh in, then rehydrated and loaded up on energy rich foods ahead of a late eveing fight, I'd likely have a c.8lbs weight gain during the same day.

Regardless, Monzon's fight night weight would have been within a few lbs, one side or the other, of Hopkins' at MW.

No I highly, highly doubt he drained 8lbs of fluid and regained it in a few hours he would’ve died by the 7th round that’s a lot of water, Carlos was a pro he didn’t let his weight get out of hand as I know of and require desperate measures he always came in strong.

Agree but remember he was 36 years old by the time Jacob's and Canelo fought him. GGG probably lost some quickness naturally. He couldn't pull the trigger the way he once could. I thought he won that first one anyway.

I can believe the 168lbs (from memory) his trainer claimed. Equally I can believe the 163lbs you estimated. Either way, it's immaterial to my initial, and only, point - Monzon's fight night weight wouldn't be significantly different to the 166lbs prime MW Hopkins weighed.

He definitely slowed down a lot. Here is amateur GGG in his early 20s vs Dirrell and Bute:

Here's GGG vs Jacobs. You can see how much slower he was as an older fighter.

More powerful, but slower. And in my opinion, in boxing, speed>power in most cases.
