if wilder does not fight povetkin next does the wbc strip him?

He got ranked number-one because the two guys ranked above him - Stiverne and Arreola - fought each other ... Arreola got KOed and Stiverne became the beltholder.

So Wilder moved up to #1.

He got ranked in the top 10 the same way Anthony Joshua is currently rated #2 in the WBC ratings and hasn't beaten anyone in the top 10.

He got ranked the same way Lucas Browne and Artur Szpilka and Erkan Teper got rated in the WBC top 10 without beating a top 10 WBC contender.

Hell, most top 10 fighters these days haven't beaten a fellow top 10 fighter. They get ranked based on who is guiding their career and on how good they "appear" to be against lesser opposition.

I won't be surprised if Wach beats Povetkin. The last time Povetkin fought someone around Wach's size was against Firtha. And Povetkin looked like **** against the taller guy. Wach is bigger and better than Firtha. Wach also has a great chin.

    It's a distance fight, regardless.

And if Povetkin wins, he'll push back the Wilder fight well past January. It'll be next May or June ... so Wilder will fight one or two times before then (Spzilka will be one of them). Don't be shocked if one of those defenses comes before this year is over.

Unfortunately this is very true. Wish there was more top 10 v top 10 action, but this is how it usually goes, and Wilder's no different than most of today's contenders. Scott at least drew against a top 10 HW in Glaskov, and most believe he beat him, so its a better win than most undefeated hw risers in the abc rankings. In fact, I just looked at the rankings in all the organizations, and the only undefeated fighter, with no draws on their resumes, who has even arguably beat better competition than Wilder did and are ranked in any organization right now is Spilzka. And I don't think too many people would suggest Spilzka would beat Wilder. That leaves Joshua, Parker, Ortiz, Martin, Browne, Ruiz, among the notable names who are highly ranked in some organization or another that don't have as good a resume as Wilder did when he got the title shot.

The more I look at it, the more I wonder why Wilder gets all the criticism he gets. I suspect its probably because of people like Gilfoid etc, who hype him way too much.

Who has Wach ever beaten that makes people think he's dangerous?

Oops, was going off memory and totally forgot about Spilka's loss to Jennings. So, there are actually no undefeated hw's with no draws in the abc rankings right now who have as good a resume as Wilder did. That's not a compliment to Wilder so much as an insult to modern hw boxing.

It's not who he's beaten. He's got his fair share of wins over the usual suspects. It's that when he faced the best - Wlad - he frankly held his own and even rocked Wlad in the fifth.

David Haye, Bryant Jennings and Mariusz Wach performed the best out of all of Wlad's title challengers during his current reign.

Povetkin, on the other hand, was beaten like a dog by Wlad.

Plus, Wach got busted for taking PEDs not too long ago. In Russia (where Povetkin-Wach will take place), apparently, you can take all you want.

Also, against big men, Povetkin hasn't exactly excelled. Wlad destroyed him. Firtha, a journeyman, fought well based simply on his size.

I think Povetkin looks fine against guys his size or smaller. They are all right in his wheelhouse. But if he's fighting a guy nearly 6'8" with a steel chin (like Wach) ... it's not going to be another blowout like the Perez and Charr fights were.

I get your point, but I can't call the Scott farce as a legitimate win for Wilder.
He does have a win against one top10 fighter at least in Stiverne.

The good thing about Klitschko getting injured is that it pushes the probable Klitschko/Wilder unification WAY, WAY BACK. Wilder will have to defend his WBC title before he could try to get the unification, if they do enforce it.

Last I heard, Klitschko/Fury was due in February. Plus, Klitschko will need a few months training camp. May or June is the earliest I can expect him to fight once he fights Fury. This is without looking at his past fights' schedule, though.

Erkan Teper and Maris Brideis. I think Teper is like #5 IBF and ranked around 10 with the rest of the belts (I think). After the Charr knock-out, shouldn't Brideis be high up on the WBC rankings since they always seem to have Charr highly rated.

I don't think Charr was rated when Maris beat him.

Good picks. I was actually thinking Teper had an early loss, got him mixed up with Takam I think, and Bredies isn't listed as ranked on the site I looked at but maybe is by now. I'd still consider Scott a better win than Charr (Breidis's claim to fame) and Scott better than Duhaupas and White Wolf better than Price (for Teper), but its arguable, particularly for Teper.

Still, the point stands, Wilder's comp was better than the great majority of similarly positioned ranked fighters currently.

him fighting in November has nothing to do with the purse bids there set for October

and povetking doesn't have to care at all about wilder schedule. Fact is the Russians are confident about winning purse bids and when they do they are the ones who set the date for the fight not wilder

wilder can say he wants to fight in januray but unless his side win purse bids, the Russians decide when and where the fight happens

Probably not since I checked up on the rankings for September and don't see Charr except at around #15 for the WBC, I think it was.

He's fighting Helenius next. If he gets past Helenius, I think he'll have the better resume than Wilder. Also, if Helenius beats Teper, he'll also be an undefeated fighter with a better resume than Wilder; although, Helenius does have some questionable decisions. Been a while since I saw the fight, but I think the Chisora fight was questionable.
