We'll all talk about how he was "exposed", and it would be true to an extent. But let's also give the guy credit. He could have fought a MUCH easier opponent in Whyte for MUCH more money. And that would have probably let to a higher cut in an AJ fight. But that would have been unsatisfying to real fans, and he'd still be a massive underdog to those in the know. Instead, he doesn't want to be anybody's joke opponent, wants to prove he's top notch before the mega AJ clash, so he's going for the fight that will gain him more insider respect and credibility. If he beats Ortiz, I'll be convinced he's got a solid shot against AJ, and hopefully others will too. Good for him, going for this fight is the mark of a true champ, I wish he'd gone that route earlier in his career. That said, I think it's 50/50 this fight happens, and if it doesn't I'll blast him again.
A loss won't really expose him as a hypejob because most people think he's a bum already. Getting beat will just be an 'i told you so ' moment from the majority of the forum. And even if he wins , he still won't get any credit.
It is a 50/50 fight as nobody can really say one is a clear favourite over the other. It's a hard fight to call as we don't know how much Ortiz has left at his age and if Wilder ever had anything to begin with. Even if Wilder loses, it's how he loses that is most important. If it's a close fight and he shows a better chin than anyone thinks he currently has, maybe by rising off the floor like both Joshua and Wlad did against each other, he might come out of it with more appreciation than he went in with. As for him taking this fight. Well he isn't in charge of that, but if can take the blame for Haymon's choices of opponent then he can also take the credit when Haymon finally decides to put him in with a top fighter. I hope he wins and proves some people wrong, Ortiz winning wouldn't be good for the sport with him being a drug cheat and being so old.
i dont know the background to wilder and haymon but looking from the outside i think wilder made this fight himself to try and put all the trolling he gets on the internet to bed. for haymon this fight makes no sense whatsoever ortiz is in the who needs him club. no money/no tv /no fans/ but a dangerous fighter. ortiz is the type of fighter don king would have signed and then anyone not under a don king contract in the 80s and 90s would have to fight an ortiz type fighter if they wanted to get a mandatory slot v his money fighters. if wilder loses and aj wins then wilder will be in ortiz boat of who needs him for so little money.
History will record that the WBC king faced the Best Undefeated Puncher of his time, the man everybody avoided... Ortiz is the nightmare of any promoter, Wilder is actually very independent & since he won the Green Belt, he took over decision making. A normal promoter will want to fight any heavyweight except Luis Ortiz, as a supporter of Wilder, I hope he does win this one! I never seen Luis Ortiz lose, so the best outcome is a decision win for Wilder, maybe a late TKO...Trying to storm Luis Ortiz early is high risk, low reward The peasants will continue to hate the WBC King win, lose or draw...
Depends on how he loses...if he gets up from a big punch from Ortiz, they both pound away for 12 rounds and he loses on a decision, could be good for his image. If he then immediately calls for a rematch then his stock rises even more so.
'going for this fight is the mark of a true champ' uhh no, hes been a champ for 3 YEARS. Going for this fight should have happened 2-3 years ago. A true champ doesn't wait 3 years to give us a good defense
I have theses exact sentiments sir Footwork Ortiz Jab Ortiz IQ orttz More refined technique Ortiz Wilder full swing feet off the floor off balance throwing full body weight power Oh and obviously height and reach I will be betting on Ortiz
Errr "much easier opponent for much more money", how much easier can Wilder go? We had Stiverne II ffs, before that it was embarrassing and he didn't want to fight Whyte, he was offered a career high payday and basically refused it and fought Stiverne. He didn't choose Ortiz instead of Whyte or anybody else, he had already refused the Whyte fight once. He isn't doing this for boxing fans because if he gave a toss about boxing fans we wouldn't have seen Stiverne II. Parker and Joshua are going large, Wilder is out in the cold, earning next to nothing compared to those two, so he had to do something and this is about as good as it could get for him. And with respect Wilder has had 39 professional fights and is fighting a 39 year old who struggled with Malik Scott a couple of fights ago and now we are supposed to start giving him praise for fighting Ortiz? So what you are saying is.. let's forget the rest of the way below average opponents and start praising Wilder for finally fighting a top 10 heavyweight. It's embarrassing to suggest it.
Haters won't give him credit, but reasonable posters will. If 50% hate Wilder now on the forum and don't give him any credit, it will drop down to maybe 30% if he beats Ortiz.
Wouldn't be good for business, wouldn't really be good for boxing legacy. But it would be perversely amusing to see fan boys on both sides dreams crushed.
