the guy has never even fought a top 5 fighter, he is no different than all those heavies before him who managed to become the 5th best hw of their time. so all those fighters who became 3rd or 2nd best, are ahead of him on an atg list, never mind all those who were actually regarded as the best.

Somewhere in the bottom... At least for now.

    In half-ordered, half-random order*:

    Foreman
    Tyson
    Holyfield
    Frazier
    Ali
    Lewis
    Louis
    Marciano
    Holmes
    W. Klitschko
    V. Klitschko
    Liston
    Johnson
    Bowe
    Patterson
    Dempsey
    Norton
    Walcott
    Shavers
    Mercer
    Moore
    Moorer
    Charles
    Douglas
    Byrd
    Ibragimov
    Povetkin
    Spinks
    -
    Fury
    Joshua

Sometimes old fighters are romanticized and sometimes current fighters' opponents appear better than they are, as their names have yet to slip into oblivion - as is the case with some of the opposition of the fighters of the past.

I do, however, feel that Wilder has yet to face opposition that merits him being called an All-Time Great. I admit I might be somewhat biased, both due to not living through the primes of a lot of the listed fighters and finding Wilder's windmill-style very unappealing. He is, admittedly, improving though and he is quite athletic.

The fact of the matter is that Wilder has yet to prove that he is even at the top of his own era though. The Ortiz-fight tonight will bring us a little closer to an answer to that, but let's hold the ATG-talk till after bouts with a few more top opponents.

*I'm not interested in a long discussion about my list, this is my opinion.

Above Gerald Washington. That is literally the most we can say at this point.

you don't think much of the history of the heavyweight division. Wilder is not near the ATG list or even the very good fighters list yet. What has he done? Why this overrating stuff? People have to earn things.

Because I have watched hundreds of hours of black and white 8mm film of the best fighters throughout history.

I'm sorry for believing that Julius Long would beat Jess Willard.
That Michael Spinks would have been the GOAT if he fought before 1960.
Wilders TITLE RUN is soft, but no softer than Valuevs.
And Valuev is widely considered a top 30.
Every decade or so, 2-3 fighters elevate themselves into the lists.

Every time....an old timer is pushed down and eventually out of the lists.

Even John Ruiz would be even with Louis, Shmelling and the Rock.

Yet I'm sure this shout will garner dozen of facepalms.

Regardless of what Wilder does tonight, it's beyond premature to debate his status in that context.
