Holmes still defeats witherspoon in 83, then Larry gives him a rematch in 85. Witherspoon then take s spinks place and beats Holmes. He holds on to the title via split decision in a rematch. What then? He has to face Tangstad, Cooney and eventually Tyson. How do those 3 fights play out?obviously he only meets Tyson when and if he gets past Cooney. Is Tim capable of this and how does a 88 show down with Tyson go.?
If he beat Holmes, DKP is having him face nothing but DKP fighters. That would be the contract he had to sign to get a Holmes rematch. Anyone for a minute thinks Larry signs that fight? i think King does what he does best and overlooks the topography. And the shining star upcoming is Tyson, who King does not have signed. So, he needs a weak champion to lose to Tyson and then he gets in with his options. So Tim gets a guy like David Bey. A Bruno rematch. Tucker. Tubbs maybe.
That scenario sounds very plausible regarding Dk. If Tim had defeated Holmes in even one fight he would be regarded as the lineal champion. That would have been worth playing up with for King and the dollar signs. He could have had tim facing a number of easy touches. With Tyson looming he gets Tim to vacate the ibf belt and, in the same fashion as spinks did have witherspoon hold out for the big money fight with Mike. He'd know that spoon was erratic and could lose any time so better to get the big money in a fight with mt. That takes place roughly 87 /88. Tyson was unstoppable then and stops spoon in around 3 rounds. That's one way it could have happened.
Yep, the Cooney of that point John is no threat. I reckon spoon roughs him up and stops him in 4 round s. The Tyson fight is the total opposite and don't see spoon getting the chance to do much.
Fergy your questions always seem to open up a healthy robust debate on both sides. Sticking to the timeline Tim ko Cooney who at this time was a mental and physically not the force of the late 70's / early 80s. Tangstad a easy payday for Tim. Tyson some how King would make sure Tim is not paid properly and as Tim later admitted he didn't try losing title to Smith because of King contractual problems who he later sued and won. Tyson was King golden duck. A unmotivated Tim is destroyed in 1 rd.
It was better for Holmes legacy to be beaten by Spinks. Somehow. It was at least two superfight rather than one fight wher he was beaten by a guy who shouldn't have beaten him, although the Spinks win in the first fight was a shock. I didn't expect that. I expected Spinks to be knocked out early.
