The holder of the Linear title is the man who beat the man who beat the man. In a situation where the Linear Champion retires, the concensus #1 and #2 must meet in order to establish a new lineage. That CLEARLY has NOT happened. Wlad [or anyone else] is NOT the Lineal TRUE champion @ HW until the concensus #1 and #2 fight to establish a new lineage. The fact that the Ring Magazine handed Wlad their worthless trinket is IRRELEVANT. The Ring does NOT get to decide who is or who is not the Champion @ HW.
Wlad had not lost to Byrd. He beat him twice. Brewster in the rematch. Against Puritty he was 22 years old and has a ****ing bad trainer in his corner. Same against Sanders. Nothing wrong with loosing fights. Wlad learned from losses and avoided mistakes in the future.
so regarding Sugar Ray Robinson, was not really the Welterweight champ until he fought Gavilan in 49? meaning he was only really champ at the weight for a few months right, by your definition that is. Where Hart and Root the top two heavyweights in 1905? How about when patterson fought Moore for the vacant belt in 1956, was Arcie Moore definitley the second best heavyweight in the world? When did Marvin Hagler's title run begin? the lineage gets a bit shaky round there. I'd love these answers so I can sort out my database :good
The Klitschko apologies being offered up in this forum are truly PATHETIC. "Early losses"? "Gassed himself out"? Just SAD. You're right, there is no comparison to be made between Norton and Wlad. Norton has the W over Ali and lost to ATG fighters like Foreman and Holmes. Wlad, OTOH, got KTFO but two no-hopers and a semi retired pro golfer. And as far as Wlad's wins are concerned, Wlad has not beaten a single HW of note in his entire career... Norton > Wlad
Another question to consider- How many future HOF'ers and ATG's has Klit beaten? While Wlad's opposition may be the best the division has to offer- was the callibur of his opponents LEGENDARY? Absolutely not. I have to say though- it is not entirely his fault that we can not place him as an ATG- we cannot see him perform against other ATGS- he beats the best opposition AVAILABLE to him handily! It isn't his fault that his reign is during a weak era of Heavyweight boxing. Historians will mention him when it comes to talking about heavyweights of 98-2011+ because there is no one else as noteworthy- but he will not dethrone the Ali's and Louis's and Holmes's in my opinion.
What does any of this have to do with the FACT that the HW title is currently vacant? If you think Wlad is the legtimate champ @ HW then I'd love to hear your detailed explanation of why and HOW? The floor is yours...
Then tough titty. The title remains vacant until the consensus #1 and #2 meet. How the **** do you legitimize a HW Championship fight to crown a new champ when the #2 contender, who is active, isn't a participant? That **** doesn't make a bit of damn sense...
He's already an ATG for HW's. His longevity and consistency as one of the top HW champions, next to his bro has solidified his place in boxing history. It's not Walds fault he's fighting in a weak era of HW's. And he's doing exactly what he should be considering the opponents he's facing.
Naysayer's problem is he doesn't really have any boxing knowledge and is just repeating things he's heard. He doesn't realise that the original "Man" was Sullivan and he never faced Peter Jackson, he was just awarded his belt because was considered the Champion of Champions. He was seen as the best. Root and Hart fought for the vacant belt becasue the retiring champion, Jeffries, said they were the two who should fight. Not a boxing organisation, not a consensus between fans, but the retiring champion. The way I see it, The Ring is the only belt awarding ranking system that doesn't strip and doesnt exclude boxers for being beltholders with other organisations. People use their rankings when deciding who the next "champ" will be. If they say Wlad is the man, I have no problems with that.
Like who? Names please. And now that I think about it, Vitali has a STRONGER claim to the Lineal title than does Wlad...
He wins and defends his title 15+ times, maybe picks up the WBC later when Vitali bails, top 12-15 without question.
