Who had just beaten the "Most Dangerous Puncher" in the division (Samuel Peter) and who had defeated the #1 ranked HW.

"When active" I never said otherwise. However Vitali missed four years with a snapped Acl. You don't maintain your spot especially when it seemed he would never fight again. Wlad defeated Peter and Byrd establishing himself as the best HW in the world something that has not changed since then.

    He sure was Dumbo.

The Ring magazine in the Volume III 2005 issue.

    Vitali Klitschko, Champion
    Chris Byrd
    John Ruiz
    Hasim Rahman
    James Toney
    Monte Barrett
    Andrew Golota
    Fres Oquendo
    Jameel McCline
    Corrie Sanders
    Lamon Brewster

When Raham fought Toney in 2006 , he was in the best shape in years because he still thought he was going to be fighting Vitali.

So What about Joe Louis time streak between 42-46? He fight one fight in 2 years .... But that count in his streak.
Klitschko is the longest reigning IBF, WBA, WBO & IBO heavyweight champion in history with the most title defenses for the IBF, WBO & IBO titles.
Overall, he is the second longest reigning Heavyweight Champion of all time with the second most successful career grand total title defenses with 22 (including his "super" title recognition). On 13 October 2013, Boxrec rated Klitschko as the number two pound-for-pound fighter in the world. On 15 December 2014, he reached a career peak of number two on the pound-for-pound list of The Ring. Klitschko is second on the all-time list for most heavyweight title fights with 26, behind only Joe Louis with 27.

After he beat Chris Byrd actually.

Byrd was only #1 by way of corrupt Don King tactics. He should have lost all his 4 previous fights.

After Wlad bear hugged him to death, he was clowned by Povetkin and then he was almost put away in the first round by a light heavyweight.

Wlad starting his title run against such a weak opponent proves how rubbish the division was/is.

    Ring ratings at the end of 2005;

    Chris Byrd
    Hasim Rahman
    James Toney
    Lamon Brewster
    John Ruiz
    Monte Barrett
    Calvin Brock
    Wladimir Klitschko
    Samuel Peter
    Nicolay Valuev

In the old days if a Byrd-Rahman fight couldn't be made a Byrd-Wlad fight could have been a title fight.
