Wladimir Klitschko has all the tools to be a great heavyweight. He also has the image to be a major star in the USA. Smart, articulate, and personable!

However, he must become much more active and become a fighting champion. 2 fights a year is not enough for him to gain notice and remain in the public mindset.

He must clean out the heavyweight division! Defeat all the best available (Ibragimov, Chagaev, etc.), the average but recognizable names (Rahman, Peter, Maskaev, etc.), and the up and comers (Povetkin, Haye, etc.)

Regardless of purses, he must fight every two to three months and dominate each time out. In the USA and in Europe.

This is the strategy employed by greats like Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali (see 1966 activity).

Wladimir has stated he wants to be recognized as a great. He cannot control the quality of opposition available, but he can control his fight schedule and his opponents. Lots of them available!

I hope Vitali is healthy now, and his body stops falling under him. Two brother champions would be a phenomenon.

But as for Wlad, there is no one out there.

I think thats a fair post. He needs to fight more often and beat all the current contenders, then he will cement his place in history as a great.

Wlad is a champion now and not a contender. He has done alot of fights in the past.

Now he must concentrate on unification.

His contract with HBO likely prohibits him from fighting more often. That combined with the lack of viable opponents.

I think worse than Wlad not fighting enough, he's not fighting the fights people want to see. I feel most fans want to see Wlad tested, but thats hard to do when he's fighting lame oppenents like Austin, Brock, and a old Bryd. I want to see him fight guys like Chagaev, Valuev, and Peter again, guys that will actually give him a fight. I hope Wlad retires that weak champion Iggy for good, so we dont have to see his boring ass again.

Yeah, it's ashame he's not more active, although I don't think that's really his fault.

Most elite boxers fight only twice a year, not only Wladimir.

    Mayweather..twice a year.
    Mosley....twice a year.
Hatton...fought twice in 2005 and once in 2006.
    Pacquiao.....twice a year.
    Calzaghe...twice a year.
    Kessler....twice a year.
    Juan Diaz....twice a year.
    Israel Vasquez....twice a year.
    Bernard Hopkins....once a year.
    Rafa Marquez...twice a year.
Juan Manuel Marquez...has fought only twice this year.
    David Haye...twice a year.

"Wlad Klitschko fights only twice a year"

    Let's change that phrase:

"Almost all top boxers fight only twice a year"

The two fights a year thing with these guys really drags the momentum they build up after a big win. They should fight at least 3-4 times a year.

Or am I off base here, does twice a year make a slow momentum build up to a frenzy come fight night. Of course it all probably comes down to profitability.

Side note, how's Wlads hand doing. Is he ready to go?

I think all pro fighters on the top level should fight more often. As has been said, this is common for these guys to do; fighting once every 5 to 7 months.

    I agree its rediculous.

I think Wlad's current downtime was due to him being unable to get anyone worth fighting, as the only fighters avialable would have been a waster of time. I also think he has intentionally been waiting this time, for the Ibrag Holy winner in hopes of unification, at long last. And for that, I can certainly condone the waiting.

I also think he is looking towards Chagaev, as welll, to further unify the titles. But Ibrag is next, and seems to be a done deal, but lacks the confirmation.

Sure, Klitschko should fight more often but that's easier said than done. There aren't always good fights to be made, and I think everybody would prefer to wait a couple of extra months to fight for another belt rather than fight, say, Hasim Rahman.

As a Wlad fan myself, I have to agree with this thread.
Another aspect of this is that Wlad has taken virtually no punishment in his last several fights (Byrd, Brock, Austin, Brewster), he's in the prime of his career, he needs to be more active.

I´m not sure if it´s really up to Wlad how often he fights. The politics in boxing are more often than not mind bogglingly complex.

I think Wlad would really gain a lot from a clear win, especially a KO over Valuev actually. A fight between two fighters of their size would be really easy to hype. Valuev has also never really been whipped. He has lost but never really beaten the crap out of. If Wlad could do that to the giant, it would really add to his reputation.

Also if Wlad can get two more belts, not just one, it should really get him undisputed recognition as the champion of the division.
