I do agree though that it would be much better if Wlad was more active. He could certainly have had a fight in say October/November. And even if would have been against a mediocre opponent it could have done a lot.

He could have for example either avenged his loss to Sanders, gotten Tony Thompson out of the way, fought a name like Rahman, Tua, Briggs or Ruiz. All would have looked really good on his resume if he´d have dominated/KOed them.

I think he would of fought in November if he wouldnt of ****ed up his hand, its probably best he takes a longer break before he fights the weak WBO champion sultan. This fight is going to be boring until Wlad knocks him out in the 8th or 9th round, I just cant wait until Wlad fights guys like Peter, Chagaev, and Valuev.

That sounds good to say, but what if he fought Thompson in a meaningless, onesided fight, then fractured a bone in his hand in the process, and was unable to be ready for this upcoming Ibragimov unification fight. The cleaning up and defining of the division is certianly worth having to wait a few extra months, I think.

But that said, Lewis used to fight twice a year, as so many others have, so this is nothing we haven't seen many times before.

I was really disappointed he fought only 2x this year like 06. 3x/year would be good but I wouldnt be as upset if he fought more meaningful fights. The brewster fight was ok since it was revenge but austin was garbage. If in 08 he fights 2x but it is aginst iggy and chagaev, i would be fine with that. best case scenerio this year would be:

    feb: iggy
    june: chagaev
october: povetkin/chambers/thompson winner (winner of povetkin-chambers should fight thompson in a super eliminator)

If the guy is not fit you do not fight, It is as simple as that.

 Give him a break his post wasnt that bad, people do overrate Wlad too much especially on ESB, but he is the best of this era I'll give him that much.

Agree. A Shame. Boxing is such a wonderful sport. The mainstream in the USA would embrace it much more, if champions fought the best and fought often.

Wlad has already fought 52 fights professionally after an extensive amateur career. he fights 2-3 fights a year...lately every six months...lewis fought once in 03, once in 02, twice in 01, 3 times in 2000, twice in 99. no different than Wlad. Holyfield fought twice in 99, once in 98, twice in 97, twice in 96, no different than Wlad. Tyson fought twice in 91, 3 times in 90, twice in 89 no different than Wlad. CHagaev has not fought since April. Maskaev in almost one year. to single out Wlad for activity is ridiculous. He is not much different than most guys with belts. it is too hard to get fights made, and vs. good competition for most guys top to bottom in weight classes. Instead of singling Wlad out, we should be congratulating him and Ibragimov for scheduling what hopefully will be the first unification bout in ten years at heavyweight.

I hope Wlad fights Sultan, Thompson, Chagaev and then Povetkin all in the year of 2008. Then defends the WBA belt against Valuev at the beggining of 2009.

    Sultan - February
    Thompson - early May
    Chagaev - August
    Povetkin - November
    Valuev - March 2009

    just a dream.....

:good I can certainly overlook a fighter taking more time to set up a fight, if its an all important, long overdue, and much needed, unification fight.

He has sit idle for more time than usual in hopes of getting Ibragimov in the ring, and it looks like it has paid off.............And if after this fight, he has to sit idle for yet anothet extended time in order to get Chag in the ring, so be it. That's a small price to pay to get the belts unified.

Very :good post. I wish Wlad would have an extra fight here and there too. But the political and business complexities make it very difficult. Most posters that criticize Wlad are just haters that don't like the fact that the best HW in the world doesn't have the look they want :-( As joeboxer has showed, their arguments are seldom fair or backed by the facts.

:patsch the posters that critizize VLAD seem to be suffering from some kind of COLLECTIVE DELUSION ! they seem to think he must do alot more then any champ in history to get the same respect ! And i agree that his LOOK has something to do with it !:deal

I think wlad has been working very very hard to get fights. Contracts, promoters, ect....thats alot to deal with plus the fact that most respectable fighters were all fighting the last part of 2007.

I dont think wlad wants to fight JUST to fight. He wants unification. He has said that from the begining. We all know unification fights take time to put together. I think he will fight 3-4 times in 2008.

that is exactly what Wlad did. He wants unification. all the other champs had fights for late 2007....wlad was smart...he sat back let the chips fall where they may and is now in place for unification with Iggy which WILL happen in Feb.

I give credit to Wlad for being patient so he could get what he has wanted all along....UNIFICATION!!!!!
