Kind of , not really , i wouldn't say so. He was a clinch master. Manny used scream at him all the time to let his hands go.

    http://www.boxingnews24.com/2010/09/steward-was-telling-wladimir-to-stop-clinching-peter/

He was taken 20 seconds away from the distance by 6 foot Chambers who had the punch of a 175 pounder.

He was scared to move towards Ibrahamov who was half his size and limited in skill , no punch with zero athletic ability

Wlad never held a high guard. His defence consisted of illegal backing humping. Guys couldn't land on him because they were either too small , too limited , or they were just leaned on every time they got close.
This prime Wlad under Manny went life and death with Peter , floored by Williamson , looked average against slow as molases Thompson and fought timid against total non-factor David Haye , even picking up a point deduction for excessive holding.
The Wlad Saturday looked miles better than the guy who deserved to be DQ'd for throwing Povetkin around the ring by his neck for 12 rounds.
Saturday's Wlad showed agility and evasiveness that he never showed before. Parrying and riding with Joshua's shots and pivoting off out of harms way.
Wlad 15-18 years ago stood upright , stiff as a poll with zero upper body movement and backed off in straight lines. You can't say he was better when knocking over cans like Austin or the washed up remains of Ray Mercer cos those guys aren't remotely close to a guy like Joshua.

One very important thing we saw was a key to beating Joshua

A key to beating Joshua lies in getting him to try and ko you, being smart enough to lock him out of it for long enough.... be smart enough to pick up when hes gassed due to his massive girth and muscle size... and then ko him there and then.

wlad had the skills to achieve some of that tonight, but didn't have the tank to deliver the second half of the plan.

Agreed. Also a third reason I'd add why fighters are lasting longer is they take less fights and less punishment. 32 was about that time when fighters were past prime. Now it seems they're lasting until 35.

    Yeah, interesting....

But back to the point. The sentence you typed... no one had said or implied that, or anything remotely close. Only you. A classic example of reframing. People do that a lot. You know the kind of thing: 'So what you're really saying is...' followed by a massive exaggeration or deliberate misinterpretation of an alternate PoV in order to discredit it.

I'm simply calling you out over this. Nothing personal...strictly business.

yeah but Haye never committed to anything himself in order to keep himself from getting knocked out, so lost the fight in conclusive fashion anyway. that's like saying bonecrusher never got caught with Tyson's best punch.

you might have a point about the left hook, i'd have to watch a few of his fight to be confident about answering that. All I know is that his timing looked off and he was missing a lot, at times lunging forward but nothing was there, which didnt look like the prime Wlad some are trying to claim.

Wladimir in his mid 30s was a little faster.

Wlad probably would have been able to out point Joshua easier with his younger reflexes , something he was doing before the 11th round at 41.

Joshua probably would always give Wlad a challenge though. And Joshua may develop more in the next years. And who knows how great he will become. His prime could be more dominant then Wlad, time will tell.

AJ would have been a dangerous fight for Wlad at any point in his career due to his power, speed, and resilience. That said, I think a younger Wladimir would have pulled the trigger and finished Joshua when he had him badly hurt in the sixth. Joshua looked to be one good punch from being done, but Wlad didn't have the reflexes or stamina to finish him.

I can't really credit Joshua for his defense at that point as he was wobbling all over the place, but his chin and heart are not questionable. It was a truly awesome comeback from AJ either way and he showed that he is the real deal.

You really need me to answer that? Well there was Chagaev, Haye, Ibragimov, Tony Thompson (When he was still good) twice and Chris Byrd.

I wouldnt call wladmir "blazing" fast. When most of your opponents are slow lumbering plodders and fat oafs of course youll look fast.

His stamina was fine. Wlads stamina isnt much of a factor because his workrate was always low with his style. Power is the last thing to go, so no. Timing? AJ simply had better anticipation and clearly trained to dodge.

I acknowledged he let his hands go more when he was younger in my post...and it got him in serious trouble! Stewat recognized this and trained him to be a cautious jab, circle, hold, and occasionally throw a 1-2 type of fighter. But he couldnt fix his jaw and for some reason, smart as stewadt was, he didnt see fit to address his lack of inside fighting, body shots, and most importanly DEFENSE. Even if youre not good at taking hits, of your defense is great you can compensate. A younger Wlad would have a major punchers chance, sure, but along with that you have to accept his flaws. Deal with it.

Wlad "always got up" against sanders, purrity, and brewster? You learn something new every day.

The layoff helped wlad more than hurt him. Something was clearly off with him in the Fury fight, and he didnt take any serious punishment nor was he in an insane training camp wearing out his joints etc. the year off gave him time to get his mind right and get back in the "zone" and it showed. He put on a classic performance and i rate that title fight as one of the best 30 HW title fights of all time (right up there with norton vs holmes and ali frazier 3). Win or lose wladmir put a hell of a performance on. I still rate him high h2h and he will always be a top ten for sheer legacy and longevity, but im not gonna tap dance around and ignore his flaws.

1-I agree. I dont get why people are acting like AJ would have been just another bum of the month and that Wlad woukd have "easily" won if he were younger. Theyre reacting as though this was Leon Spinx vs Ali. Give AJ some credit!

Huge, powerful, devastating combinations, savage uppercuts, decent stamina and good recuperative powers. Which of Wladmirs previous opponents fit that description? He would have always been a tough fight win or lose.

2-idk about him pulling the trigger and finishing him either. Wlad is very deceptive to the untrained eye. He has the size, reach, skill, and power to drop almost anyone. Yet even when he was younger he was shy and waited until he was 102% the opponent presented no threat to him and was tenderized. And the crazy part is, Wlad was a GOOD finisher when he chose to be. He was just terrified of getting mauled or countered. Its all in his head. He could have been one of the top 5 ko artists in his division.

Great post, i disagree only with one point, i rate the fight as one of the top 10 HW title fights of all time at least
and not as a top 30 HW title fight.
