Fighters rarely get the plaudits they deserve till a few years after they retire. Then people look back on their legacy and resume and reminisce about how great they were. The same will happen for Roy Jones Jr, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr & De La Hoya.

 

Whoa, hold on there a second. Are you just saying it is your opinion that Toney was the man at 168? He was not a unified champion was he linear?

Because if he was not and we are going on opinion than Glass Jaw Roy Jones Jr has not defeated one legit champion in his whole career only paper beltholders. Pound 4 Pound does not mean squat that is all fantasy and conjecture anyway I don't care if Toney was P4P #1.

If you recognise the very first title holder at 168, the lineage actually dates from Murray Sutherland in 84 up to Bruno Girad vacating in 2001 :deal.

 

I thought Virgil Hill took 2 rounds of Jones, before his rib was shattered in the 4th round.

Montell Griffin took a highly impressive 5 rounds, but lost points for a KD that shouldn't have been counted.

Other than that, it was a very impressive run.

If you class fighters like Toney as "paper belt holders" if they aren't undisputed or linear, then that means fighters like Wlad K, Vitali, Morales, Barrera, Pacquiao etc. etc. etc are/were only "paper belt holders", whereas the likes of Shannon Briggs and Buster Douglas were "legit" champions.

Toney had the IBF belt. It is the only belt he has ever held in any division. I believe he is a 3 division IBF Champion.

There was debate between other posters about who was THE Champion at the time and it was said that it was Toney at the time now to find out it was just opinion and conjecture.

Roy Jones has never beat a legit champion in his whole career his resume is **** and it is his own fault for avoiding fighters or just flat out pricing himself out of fights because he knew he had a Glass Jaw. :smoke
