If You Could Have A Job In Boxing What Would It Be?

Pure chance, my sons, now 22 & 25 played ice hockey at 9 years old. I used to call the amateur games as matchnight announcer. That led me to being employed by the Fife Flyers pro ice hockey team as matchnight announcer.

Stevie McGuire snr. ran the matchnight scurity for the Flyers and he asked me to MC an amateur boxing show. I got two jobs out of that one and it just snowballed from there. Started doing am's all over Scotland then I got my pro licence about 5 years ago and do all Tommy Gilmours shows.

Did some Hayemaker and the British ABA's on Setanta but then they went bust. Still doing plenty of am's and pros most weeks.

It's a great gig, you get to meet people that you only dream of, interviewed Sugar Ray in front of a live audience last year and got to talk to him over dinner for a couple of hours. He even took my phone and spoke to Laurie Redfern of Inverness City ABC for about 10 minutes. It's a real privilege, you couldn't make it up!

 

Thanks for that Mr Stephen. Nice insight into it. amazing to think a Amatuer Ice Hockey game could lead to a career in boxing.

This might sound corny, but the fact that I haven't boxed gives me more respect for those who do. I would like to think that comes across in the introductions. If you have the balls to step into the ring, you deserve the best introduction possible.

I did do last Friday, then staight home (3 hours) and up at 8am to drive to Durham, it's not all glamour!!

Really funny when I phoned Laurie at home on a Saturday night and told him that Sugar Ray wanted to speak to him, needless to say, he didn't beleive me at first.
