Hey, thank you so much. Just by reading your post, I could actually visualize some of that great event in my mind. That is amazing. I used to think that if I could see any fights that are unviewable, they would be Robinson at his best at welterweight. Then I found that a few of his welterweight fights were actually recorded by spectators. So, I have actually seen a few short films of Robinson at welterweight. The short films don't do him justice though. But anyway, now if I could see any fights, they would be that of Greb. Greb and Robinson are probably my two favorite fighters, along with my childhood hero, Mike Tyson, who I like more or less for sentimental reasons.

Anyway, I am getting away from the topic here. So you actually saw Ray Robinson? If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? I am a young man of 24, but I would already consider myself somewhat of a historian of the sweet science. To actually get the chance to converse with someone who's dad saw Greb and who himself saw Sugar Ray Robinson is a big deal for me.

So your dad's #1 pound-for-pound was Greb? How about you? Mine is Sugar Ray Robinson, but Greb is up there in the top 2 or 3 for me. Anyway, thanks again for responding to my post.

You must have been talking to Tommy V. I DO NOT hate Joe Louis. On the contrary, I am a fan of Mr. Louis. Tommy couldn't deal with being debated with facts, so he got his feelings hurt. Anyway, what I said about Joe Louis is that people tend to overrate him due to his long, incredible reign. Someone like a prime Ali would outbox Louis all night long, in my opinion. Look at what Conn did to him in fight one. But, that is in no way a knock on Joe Louis.

This is an excellent question as I've always maintained one of the few accurate snippets of what is now the first Greb book "Give Him To The Angels" 1946 was the mention "He wasn't an in an outer but he DID have off nights" Its true. Some of the on nights not yet mentioned...Virtually all the Pittsburgh boxing writers who knew Greb best would say the fourth Tom Gibbons fight in M.S.G. that lead him into the first Tunney encounter. Harry was jumping/blazing incredible that night. His mgr, George Engel, mentioned Harry being the underdog had allot to do with it.
I would also mention the 6 rounder with Chuck Wiggins underneath Dempsey/Miske achieved some incredible write ups and many a latter recollection from some of the most legendary boxing writer/referees of Harrys era-
Ed W. Smith-Chicago Evening American, E.W. Dickerson-Grand Rapids Herald. Another incredible jumping/blazing performance from a young two eyed Greb.

Nice post. So how was "Give Him To The Angels" ? I have read so many great reviews on "The Fearless Harry Greb", which is a book that I really want to read. It seems I read one person's opinion about how the first Greb book wasn't all that good. But I mean, only two Greb books. If that's it, I'd like to read them both.

"Give Him To The Angels" 1946 is really about banging your head against the wall in re what it could have been, as J.R. Fair had so much access to Greb folk and blew it. I do believe the ultimate goal of that book was a feature film enlisting the help of Fairs lifelong buddy Jimmy Cagney. Despite this weight behind it, obviously it never came to be.

Abdullah,I was born in 1929...Don't feel it though...I saw your idol Ray Robinson,in his absolute prime four times ringside..First time in 1943 against a fading Henry Armstrong, and Ray played with him,MSG...The next fight at MSG,1945,against a very tough Californian, named Jimmy McDaniels...I and my father had great seatson the side balcony, overlooking the ring..In the second round Robinson, with the greatest assortment of punches,I have ever seen flattened McDaniels...The crowd was stunned,as I...The next time i saw Ray was against welter Bobby Dykes,a contender at Coney Island Veledrome,in I believe 1950..The last and most memorable time I saw Robinson was Sept. 12,1951 at the Polo Grounds againt Randy Turpin...What a night and what a fight...My fried and I left the bleacher seats ,and ended up in 2 empty seatsabout 20 rows from ringside, right before the main event...Robinson,after being cut over the eye early in the bout, opened up with a do or die attack ,and stopped the very strong and awkward Turpin in the 10th round....Sensational event...Funny to this day one scene stands out at that long ago event, which I will never forget...After the fight ended, his handlers half pushed and carried Robinson through the aisle to his dressing room, passing our seats by the aisle...Robinson with a towel half draped over his head, looked to me like he was passing out...So exhausted was Ray,as was I sreaming with the crowd....By FAR the greatest fighter in MY TIMES,was ROBINSON...Burt

    This one:

"According to the Boston Daily Globe, Greb earned a few more technical knockouts in Pittsburgh one night, though unofficially. After a female companion in his car was relieved of $95 and a ring on a lonely road in Highland Park by five robbers, Greb reported the incident to the police.

When they arrived on the scene, the officers noticed blood all over the road. It was not Greb’s."

    :D

Wow, that's pretty disappointing. One would think since it was written only 20 years after Greb's death, that it would contain more depth and accuracy. Which, I'm not judging it because I haven't read it. But, if what you say is right about it sort of being a blueprint for a potential film, then I can see how it wouldn't be so great. A lot of times when books are written to be movies, they tend to be a little to "hollywood". I don't know if that was the case here.

Hey, thank you Burt. Sincerely! Where I live, hardly no one really LOVES boxing. Even in the gym that I workout in, my boxing trainer doesn't really follow today's boxing, much less the history. My father is deceased and my son is only two. My wife listens but doesn't care and the same could be said about my mother. I wish you were my next door neighbor. ;)

I love that story and can picture it too. I can just see Greb's hair blowing in the wind as he is administering a vicious ass-whooping on those boys.:happy

Due to my PHILLY bias, I would be happy with any of the Greb-Loughran fights...If I had to choose it would be Greb-Loughran 4...the one where Loughran finally wins!!!!
