What would you have him to do to keep as much strength as possible?

Also another question, what are some good excerises make a fighter stronger without packing on weight?

I'd like to try hight intensity interval training. Pretty sure it would work.

Weight training, focusing on more reps, like above 8-10.. Try to set a bodyweight goal for full pullups for example.. If he cant do a set of 20, then there you go.

Get him to do a set of 100 pushups, cant do it, theres another goal. If he's already there, make him do 25 pullups, and 120 pushups as a goal on top of the high intensity interal training.

If you do sprints, increase the regiment gradually, and set a goal. Try doing it on a soft surface, grass, even sand to mix it up. Carefull with sand, can make the feet cramp up.. I have bad knees so I cant do a whole lot of HIIT..

He's an MMA fighter. He just lost a fight on Showtime, he didn't properly cut down to 185 and doesn't like to cut, Im trying to help him cut down better.

Good way to build the strength without putting on weight is for him to grapple with naturally bigger guys but of course talented ones.

I think Ross Enamait has some of the best fighter based workouts available on the Net. I'd check him out. He does an excellent job of mixing very sport specific strength and condition exercises. He was one of the guys pushing things like the old sledge hammer and tire routine waaaaay before it became popular.

As far as conventional lifting goes, if you want to pack on strength but not bulk then have him work with heavy weights (compound movements) and very few reps. That way you're training your central nervous system to be more efficient without producing a lot of hypertrophy.
