If something were to happen to change boxing and you had to pick between the following, which would it be (and why if you are so inclined) -- Option 1 -- Return boxing to it's "classic" weight classes (I'd keep Cruiserweight, only because it's such a large class -- 25 lbs range). or Option 2 -- Keep the weight classes, but have only one world title per weight class.
The latter. Yes there would still be too many weight classes, but the issue would be forced in each and every one.

Or Option 3 11 weight classes - traditional 8 plus 130, 140 and 154 - these divisions have history. No more divisions made specifically for lining the pockets of the Alphabet boys. And especially not Cruiser, which basically created the fat heavyweight era. Also, one champ in each division and a return to 15 rounds for a world title fight. Am I asking too much?
scartissue -- What do you mean by the "fat heavyweight era"? Since I specifically said I'd keep Cruiserweight, while you don't want it, I thought I'd at least justify my initial thinking -- It's the largest weight limit range next to Heavyweight, and I'd have to think there are a lot of fighters that are in that 190 range, but simply can't stand up to the Lennox Lewis' type "super" heavies. Granted, I may be overestimating the size differential, and maybe anything above a certain weight really doesn't matter. I know it's been sort of a maligned division, so I have a bit of a soft spot for it I guess. (I guess it's a lot easier for me to see Marciano dominating this division, had it existed, than beating a lot of the bigger heavyweights of the more recent eras even if they aren't in his league P4P.)
Mendoza -- I like a lot of your suggestions. On your first point, related to the 4-year tournament, a couple questions -- 1) So we crown a lineal champion. Does he defend this championship after the tournament is over? 2) Do the alphabet titles continue, or is this how we get rid of them?
I'd go for option 2. Shameful that most of the sports world don't know who the heavyweight champion is. When I grew up, EVERYBODY knew who Joe Louis was. P.S. Ya must be very proud of fellow Cornhusker, Terrance Crawford.
Option 1. You want to be great? Become the only featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight champion all at the same time. You want to be great? Beat every single true contender then the beat the real champion. Otherwise you can beat some bums at every division and call yourself a champion.
Yes on Crawford. I was sort of in and out of boxing when he was younger, but I did go to the Golden Gloves when it was in Omaha for my first experience of him coming up (turns out he had gone to the same HS my step-brother was coaching at, though he has since moved on to another school).
