Fritzie's whole career reminded me of the second and third phases of Duran's career. He'd lose fights he had no business losing but then come back and beat hell out of someone he had no business beating...!

I guess in the end, we could look at Fritzie as a great fighter who failed to craft a career that lived up to or completely confirmed that fact.

Anyone familiar with the good and the great during the golden era should take a moment and scan his record. There are alot of fights there. Scan it and you'll see big wins but just when you want to say "wow", he lets you down. But keep scanning... you'll see losses mounting and just when you want to say "what a bum" he slaps you in the mouth with a win over a serious guy.

    Want a bi-polar disorder? Scan Zivic's record.

Thanks for that. I stand corrected and take back my earlier statement. In truth my knowledge of zivic was limited to armstrong, robinson, cochrane and the 7 or 8 months he held the title along with the 60 odd losses. I cant say ive seen the light as i havent seen too many of his fights to form my own opinion so until i do, i'll take your word on him as im sure you know what your talking about. Again, thanks for the insight and i'll make it my business to get my hands on some of his stuff after all, everydays a schoolday

As an amateur, Robby was the Mark Breland of his day, the main difference in record being that Ray's stayed completely unblemished. Unlike Breland though, he measured up to his already legendary amateur status as a professional, then actually surpassed it. His combined pro-am record at the time of the first Turpin fight was 213-1-2, with that one loss coming against an ATG who outweighed him by 16 pounds. He beat Angott less than a year after turning pro. He beat everybody he fought until after he turned 30. Basilio rated Pep tops, but LaMotta gave first dibs to Ray, and Jake saw a helluva lot more of Robby at his peak. Robby even gets mileage out of his one stoppage loss, where he was dominating former top heavyweight contender Maxim for the title at 175 while weighing 157 himself.

Im sure in all SRR vs LaMotta encounters SRRs weight went up a few LBs, Jakes came down a few. Thats how the biz was in dem days.

"Every day's a schoolday." I like that. How true for us all, although only the intelligent recognize it...!

Not high, probably the top 100 or so. I have a system but to find where he'd place specifically, it would take me weeks because it would have to be comparative to many others in his roughly-determined tier.

Zivic would rank high on experience, but not high on dominance. He'd rank high on longevity but not high on intangibles for instance...

Prime Ali didn't have to infight. He did things other heavys could only dream about......................As for rating SRR #1, which I do, the little film I've seen of him at 147 is awe inspiring. Also, there are just so many people from that time who saw him and rate him as the best they've ever seen.
