If you heard a story that would hurt boxing legend, should you tell it?

I've always wanted to say that!

Now, janitor, let's be honest, there was nothing on Dempsey that you were talking about was there?

Ali took steroids YET didnt gain any muscle mass, strength, power, stamina or speed. He should ask for his money back and come to me next time ;)

The young Clay was actually a skinny kid who fought as a light heavy in the Olympics. Ali gained about 30 pounds of muscle rather quickly.

Like I said, I heard a rumor. Its’ only a matter of time before more bad news comes out about the stuff. In the NFL, a story broke that the some of Pittsburgh Steelers used steroids in the 1970’s. Many Athletes did. It is plausible that Ali, who was often shot up by Pacheco could have been using them as well to heal injures, or build muscle.

    Why?

    How?

Why is being oneself- something that requires no effort- ok, but taking legal supplements is not ok?

Let me illustrate this with a counter-factual: creatine is a performance-enhancing drug that is currentely legal in the US. Now, if the US parliamentary system was to pass a law banning creatine as part of a "war on drugs", would you discount the achievements of boxers with access to creatine? For that matter, given that boxers have only had access to creatine in recent years, do you subtract whatever advantages it may bestow on modern boxers when comparing modern boxers with the boxers of days gone by?

If you haven't seen the "Robot Chicken" sketch of that scene, I recommend hunting it down.

'I heard a rumour' ok cause you did, you dont know anyone important to hear rumours from

Secondly he didnt add any muscle, he was 210 against Liston and 216 against Foreman. And he had a higher bodyfat percentage against Foreman. So in 10years he didnt gain any muscle!!!! :deal

Now if you want a serious steroid suspect look no further than Vitali Klitschko:

Vitali weighed 196lbs in 1992 (the same age as the 210lb Ali who faced Liston)

Vitali weighed a lean 235lbs in 1996 the same year he failed the steroids test (an increase of 40lbs of lean muscle mass in just 4 years)

Vitali weighed a lean 249lbs in 2000 (a total gain of 54lbs of lean muscle mass in 8 years)

I doubt you'll be championing Vitali as a steroid user because of your usual reasoning

Vitali weighed 196 well into his twenties? This is why I can't buy into comparing fighters across eras on any other basis except their records against men of their own eras. Vitali's weight or someone like Sam Peter's or Ike Ibeabuchi's weights are problematical if taken across time to several generations ago.

"Ali gained about 30 pounds of muscle rather quickly."

Don't know, but a man does fill out quickly from 18 to 23 in a lot of cases. Steroids are not a necessary explanation.

You are missing my point. Ali fought at light heavy in the 1960 games. In 1964 vs Liston, he weight 210.5, which is at least a 32.5 pound gain in less than 4 years. While the weight is one thing, Ali complete transformed himself from a skinny kid into a well-muscled man in a short period. As you say >>:deal

First off, where is your source that Vitlai weighted 196 pounds in 1992? The lightest weight I ever saw Vitlai at was 205 as an 18-year-old amateur kick boxer.

Secondly, Vitlai is close to 6'8" tall, which is about 5" taller than Ali. So naturally he has more room to fill out. Vitlai putting on 30+ pounds at his size is without fat is easier to do that Ali putting on 30 pounds at his size without fat.
