Looking at Marquez's face just prior to the stoppage I was saying myself..oh ****..there goes my prediction. He got hit with quite a few flush right hands when they had their heads together..just wasn't able to stop any of the punches. And while he was throwing still, they seemed to have no steam on them at all, whereas Vasquez was still throwing with some pop. I thought Marquez would win, but I completely agree with the stoppage. I would hate to have seem him hurt bad and ruin the possibility of a third fight. At least now Vasquez has the nose excuse and Marquez has the quick stoppage excuse..all the more reason to "settle it once and for all" in a great third fight. Tremendous fighters the both of them.
Not sure if I can validate that, Honeslty it might have been but then again when do towels ever get thrown up on the top rope in celebration as a coach myself that is a clear sign to the ref to stop the fight.
Dammit Rafael! Why don't you learn a little something from your brother and BOX?!? (lost a lot of vCash on this) :yep Seriously, I have so much respect for both of these guys after these two fights. And I'm impressed with anyone who correctly predicted Vazquez by stoppage. He hits like a ****ing freight train.
I missed the hell out of this. I thought Marquez was too good for him. I called the round correctly, but for the wrong guy!
I called it wrong as well. I was expecting Marquez' jab to do a lot of damage, and for Rafael to successfully nail him with shots from the outside. Also, Marquez came up in weight for the first fight, and I thought he would be better accustomed to carrying the extra four pounds this time around.
I thought almost exactly the same as you. And combined with Roach's comments about the deteriorating condition of Vazquez, it seemed to me that Marquez might make quick work of him. But I was rooting for Vazquez, so I'm happy to be wrong. I just hope they're both OK and maybe up for a third bout.
I'm more than willing to give them longer than five months this time. And I'm certainly willing to pay good money for it. There's no way they'll be able to resist making this a PPV, and in the ensuing months they will surely play up the controversial stoppage angle to drum up interest (despite the facts stated in this thread)...hopefully they build a really good card around it and make it a very special night.
I like this idea, but it's tough to sell the little guys on PPV. To me, that would be the perfect time to have a Vargas/Mayorga-type fight as a co-feature, something with a little bit more name recognition but not really a hot fight as far as relevence is concerned. However it works out, I hope both guys get major paydays for another fight.
Both guys are true warriors. I thought the fight was stopped a lil early. Especially after Marquez being hurt in the ealier rounds and recovering. I thought he could probably survive that round, but who knows. Bring on the 3rd fight :happy
I think the stoppage was on time I watched it again and Israel was going to stop Marquez either way there was too much time left in that round and even if Marquez made it out of that round he would have to come back out for more and Vazquez IMO is a very very under rated fighter this kid would beat Manny Pacquiaos ass in sparring at Wildcard back in the day I promise you Israel Vazquez can fight.
nearly ten consecutive hard, clean, unanswered landed shots to rafael's one in return. good stoppage.
Horrible stoppage. It was a give and take battle with both taking turns hurting eachother. Marquez imo still had his legs under him, and he was firing when the ref stepped in to stop it. There is no excuse really for stopping a fight this good and of this magnitude. I cold understand a stoppage if Vasquez was administering a one way beating. But it was far from it. All the official cards were razor close, with Vasquez having a small edge due to the knockdown. Showtimes three press row judges all had Marquez leading on their cards. ......so you dont stop a fight like this unless one fighter is helpless on the ropes with his arms dropped to his side and not firing. When Diego Corrales stopped JL Castillo in their epic war, Castillo got caught by vicious Corrales shots....Castillo's eyes rolled, and his body and arms went limp.....thats a good stoppage. Raphael Marquez still had his legs under him and firing. I got to feel theirs a good chance we missed out on another Gatti-Ward, Corrales-Castillo type of fight.....the fight certainly had the makings to have been talked about with the epic battles of all-time. ......for those old enough to remember, this fight was headed to another Wilfredo Gomez-Lupe Pintor type of ending. As a fan, I felt the ref not only jobbed Marquez, he deprived me of witnessing such epic battle!:? A phuey stoppage in where else, but Israel Vasquez' backyard!:-( Let me just add that this is by no means Vasquez fault. There is no reason why he should'nt be allowed to enjoy his winning back the title, but even he must feel like the ref cheated him from a conclusive ending!
Exactly! A towel was thrown and hung on the ring ropes, but it was only after the fight had been stopped. It could have been thrown by anybody, even the Marquez corner in disgust of the stopppage. ....but make no mistake, the towel was thrown well after the fight had been stopped. Bazooka has got to be a diehard Vasquez fan to claim such utter bullcrap!
