I hadn't seen this fight since the fight. I was covering it for 'Ring Magazine', I was ringside and what sticks out is the thudding shots Zamora was landing on Eddie Logan, to this day that's what sticks in my mind. Like I haven't seen this fight since that night. Thanks to a thread on Ruben Olivares and Alfonso Zamora, I found the Zamora - Eddie Logan fight on youtube. Logan, was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb. Logan paid a heavy price, he never fought again. I really cant say why he never fought again but this fight didn't help any. The shots he took that night were hellacious. Zamora, was 32-2,31ko's, Logan was 8-7, 3ko's. Nobody thought Logan had a shot, you would of bet the house. Logan, took his beating and kept plugging away. Zamora, was a pocket Bob Satterfield, the way he was always throwing bombs. If you haven't seen him, do.
Follow the Zamora -Logan link into a wealth of Saturday Afternoon CBS Sports Spectacular Bantamweight-Featherweight 70's fights.
Thanks for this posting Dempsey, what a fight. Having not seen it I thought Eddie has chosen the wrong strategy and it was he that would be ko'd. He had one sharp left hook.
Don't know the ticket prices cos I got in free, I was covering the fights for "Ring" magazine. The undercard featured a local fighter Mark Davis who was 2-0 at the time, and a good Mexican prospect, Gerardo Pena, who was 9-0. Six months later Davis and Pena fought a tremendous fight, with Davis stopping Pena. Very good card.
Not that one but I saw just about every important fight in LA, from 1978 to 1980. I saw Zarate, Zamora, Pintor, Jaime Garza, the Montes brothers, Alberto Davila, Salvador Sanchez, Ruben Castillo, Bobby Chacon, Arguello, Bazooka Limon, Alberto and Richard Sandoval, Danny Lopez and as the saying goes and many more. I was at the Pintor - Owens fight, I can still see, the huge banner with a skeleton on it, that Owens came into the ring with. I saw Muhammad Ali spar Eddie "The Animal" Lopez. There were fights every Thursday at the Olympic. Great times in LA
Wow What a left hook. Zamora was in LA LA land. The referee did a good job making sure he didn't take another punch. Logan looked way better than his record.
Yeah, I loved reading about fights at the Olympic back in the 'early '80s. I believe JC Chavez/Mario Martinez was one of the later World Title fights held there. Also, The Inglewood Forum had competitive tournaments throughout the '80's and '90's. I recently read an article from late '99 where Jerry Buss discusses his decision to stop holding Boxing cards there - citing the inability to make any $$. He seemed to actually care about the fighters, at least if you are to believe the article.
