If you were Canelo's trainer, what strategy would you give him to beat Floyd?

From the opening bell throw everything at Floyd including the kitchen sink. Step on his toes, thumb his eyeball, rabbit punch him, headbutt him, kidney shot him, bodyslam him like Cotto does, and last but not least low blow whenever possible. If after 3 rounds Floyd is still standing strong, kiss yo ass goodbye.

you make a good point with fouling. why not rough him up if your going to loose on points any way.

I don't think a specific combination of punches is going to help much, not with his robust guard.

Personally, I agree with the poster who suggested playing rough. I say make it a dog fight. get in close and punch arm. Hit him on the hip a little. You need to **** with his mind and create new targets, as the traditional targets are all on lock down. However, more than anything, keep coming. I think you need to be ready and willing to eat punches in order to deliver your own. I remember Floyd looking a little discouraged against Burton when Burton kept coming and hitting him (despite absorbing a great deal of shots). Floyd was surely winning, but Burton made him work for it. Cotto had success in a similar manner. Obviously there isn't a proven tactic for beating Mayweather, but we can look to the people that had some success.

anticipate floyds punches and punch with him instead of slipping them. when floyd is stationary, let your combinations go with power and punish him everywhere, arms, shoulders, chest... wherever there is an opening.

work the jab, keep floyd in that gay shoulder roll pose, than bang the body with the right. as the rounds go on, come up top with the right and batter floyds left eye, cut'em then knock'em the f@#k out. Easier said than done, but that's the gist of it.

He has to do a lot unsurprisingly. The biggest thing is to cut the ring down on Floyd with intelligent pressure behind a jab(which Alvarez doesn't have a great one) and including head movement to help avoid Floyd's straight shots coming in. As soon as he gets Floyd on the ropes, he needs to let his hands fly but lower his target point(which he needs to do in general anyway). Do not go for Floyd's chin, go for the middle of his chest and the liver. Do not throw a bunch of wild punches, but do not let Floyd off the hook either, every time he's on the ropes at least some work needs to be done. That's the basic strategy. There are some nuances I don't see many Floyd opponents try. One is, though Floyd is hard to counter with his style and speed, he does have tendencies that are reasonably obvious. He likes to measure/control/blind with a pawing jab, then come over the top with the right hand, Canelo can try to force a trade there. Floyd also likes to throw the right hand a little short, then follow up with a big one, again, try to force a trade there. At the least it will make Floyd think about throwing his straight right more and it might allow for Canelo to catch Floyd flush, where you have to think that any dual exchange will favor Canelo.

All that said, will he do much of that? I doubt it. Most fighters don't adapt beyond their ingrained style. Canelo will sluggishly pursue a very safety-conscious Floyd, get potshotted by the occasional straight shot by Floyd, and not get the openings to respond in a terrible, boring fight.
