If you were Eddie Futch in Manilla

Would you have allowed Frazier to go out for the last round?

I just rewatched the Thrilla in Manilla. Futch knew how much that fight meant to Frazier and that he wouldve never recovered mentally from another loss to Ali. But he also knew that he couldnt barely see and was risking his life.

    Thoughts?

    I would

If **** got out of hand once he got out, I'd throw the towel or step in

Nope. He said he saw his fighter who was on death's door and I trust his opinion. The life is more important than a sport's outcome.

I think Futch made the right decision and I would have done the same. Joe was taking a frightful beating just before the fight was stopped

Agree. Especially the way Ali went back to his corner after Round 14, it was obvious that he didnt had anything left himself.

I would like to think I would anyway. Frazier took one hell of a lot of punishment in those late rounds and couldn't see to defend himself.

Futch did the right thing for his fighter's long term health. He wasn't to know what was happening in Ali's corner, he just looked at the damage that had been done to his fighter and thought about the potential damage that could have been done to his fighter in the next round and made a decision.

Too many trainers are willing to send their fighter out for 'just one more round' when they're hurt because they don't want to make that tough decision and don't want an L against them as a trainer. Thankfully Futch wasn't that type and made the hardest decision eventhough he knew Frazier would resent him for it.

No I wouldn't. It wouldn't matter how baddly I thought Ali was hurt. My job is to protect the well being of my fighter Frazier. If I was half the trainer that Futch was. I would know that at the very least my guy needed to win the round. Frazier couldn't go and stay away for 3 mins. I'd also know it's not in his nature to do so either. There's just too much risk there.

I would've stopped it. Frazier took an awful beating in the last round and if you had any regard for his health, it was time to end it. I know Joe would've had more peace of mind if he'd been allowed to finish the fight but that's not worth the grave risk to his well-being that would have occurred in those final three minutes.

Sometimes, you have to save a fighter from himself and I'm glad Futch had the courage to throw in the towel.

Eddie Futch had seen 8 men die in the ring up to that point. no one should question his call. in hindsight it appeared that Joe was in better shape for the last round. but thats just hindsight

    Pretty much this.
Honestly me deciding different would mean i assume i know better than Futch.
I will never be that arrogant.

God bless Eddie Futch for having the well-being for his fighter foremost in his mind when making what had to be a hard decision.
