If YOU were Joe Calzaghe, would you come out of retirement to fight Andre Ward?

You can't just use hindsight to dismiss a quality win, you have to look at where the fighters where going into the fight. Joe was completely written off, and even made an underdog by the British betting outlets, and he came out and demolished Lacy, in a punch perfect performance.

If Bute does nothing else, does that mean you don't rate Froch's win over Bute? No that's bull****

I give Joe credit for getting in the ring with Lacy, given that he tried to chicken out of the fight.

Exactly what would coming out of retirement to get completely outmatched for 12 rounds,do for his legacy.

Hes 40 years old, he'd be 41 if he decided to come back.

Its been 4 years since he fought.

Ward would arguably have beaten a prime Joe. Hopkins wasnt a puncher AT ALL at 175 yet do droped Joe.

I could see Ward finishing it in about 7

Pre-fight agenda's are meaningless. Whats happened in the ring is the only factor to be remembered.
Half of the reason Froch beat Bute was the fact Bute was not all that to begin with.

Of course not Ward is young and dangerous something that Calzaghe is afraid of ..Maybe he will wait til Ward gets knocked a couple of times to challenge him the his fans will be like look Joe fights the best !

Ward wouldnt be a big enough draw money wise I wouldnt think.
Ward fighting another American champ in Dawson was only a small hall affair in Oakland.

Also Ward hasnt made his own mark yet, he is still fighting Calzaghes leftovers and leftovers of Calzaghes leftovers.

Soon we would be reading how ward is a green prospect was a hype job, but when another American based SMW wins a world title it would then be the same story again.
Ward is only being hyped now because Calzaghe is retired and America cant stand the fact that the greatest SMW ever isnt American and want to make Ward out to be bigger and better than what he has already shown. ward still has a long way to go, and as said is fighting leftovers.

I would say no because Ward brings nothing to the table that Calzaghe hasnt already encountered

I'm in the minority, but I'd love to see it. But it would have to be a proper comeback. Not just a 1 fight money grab. Let Calzaghe have a warmup fight or 2, and if he isn't up to it physically and cuts it short, who could blame him?

Everyone is saying Calzaghe has nothing to prove. But if his legacy is so cemented, and IF he were to lose, what real harm could a post-comeback loss do?

The real problem to me is that there is so much stock put in that '0', and its misdirected.
I don't see nearly the concensus of negative feelings toward Hatton coming back. Nor for Oscar when those rumors fly. Same goes for any number of fighters who retire and come back.

FWIW, I don't think a loss in this fashion should detract all that much from Calzaghe's legacy. It doesn't make him any less of a fighter, and doesn't mean he didn't do all the things he did earlier in his career.

He'd be fighting the best prime fighter he'd faced in what would clearly be the steepest challenge of his career. So a loss would just be a number in the L column.

But a win? I don't think anyone could question his legacy then.
