If he didn't bother to cut and went on the scales 200 Lbs+ the fight would've been cancelled without question. As for two weeks not being enough to cut, it should've been. He was at the end of his camp and match fit, so all there was left was the water cut. He's gone through this an innumerable amount of times. Rockhold had an even bigger cut than him and made weight. As you have pointed out different fighters have different approaches to making weight but top fighters should be held to a higher standard. Personally I think it's likely Romero did this so he'd have a better chance of winning. At 40 this may very well be his last opportunity to earn a title shot. It's not like him and his team are averse to cheating to gain an advantage, e.g the stool incident vs Tim Kennedy.
I hated him when I watched the Kennedy fight live. I thought Romero was refusing to get off the stool and that the fight should have been stopped. I thought it was a tko win for Kennedy. I was wrong. Changed my mind on the replay. Romero wasn't being allowed to answer the bell. You could see it was the referee and officials causing the delay. http://mmajunkie.com/2014/09/dana-w...ame-in-yoel-romero-vs-tim-kennedy-controversy Cornermen use the allotted rest time between rounds to coach fighters. If there are cuts or other injuries on the fighter’s face, a cutman is used to clean blood, apply Vaseline, or a apply an enswell. In the UFC, that cutman is employed by the promotion, which in 2009 disallowed corners from applying Vaseline after “Greasegate,” a controversy in which B.J. Penn accused now-former champ Georges St-Pierre of getting unlawful aid from a cornerman who smeared grease on his chest between rounds. UFC cutmen are not licensed by the overseeing athletic commission, in this case the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the referee has no ability to discipline them. The referee, in turn, is allowed to pause the one-minute rest period to check the appearance of a fighter and his or her ability to continue, a one-two punch that aided the delay. “It was our guy who globbed all that Vaseline on his eye, so a really weird situation,” White said. “Extremely controversial.” White, however, didn’t jump to schedule an immediate rematch between the two. “Everybody knows that’s an old dirty trick, but the thing that throws a kink in the whole thing is that it was our guy that put the Vaseline on, so there was nobody trying to take advantage, and they called his guy back in to wipe the Vaseline off, and he didn’t understand." The thing that stuck out to me is that they never wiped off the Vaseline McCarthy was halting the action for. They wiped everywhere except there, and he started the next round with the glob still on his face.
Romero is a scumbag through and through - Inside and outside of the cage. Very easy to cheer against this clown whenever he fights.
Romero is a deadbeat dad and husband who suffers from a bizarre combination of roid rage and religious mania.
Rockhold comes off a bit pretentious and he hasn't been humbled by his first round losses to Bisping and Belfort.
Nothing but speculation. I don't know what he intentions with he family were. Roid rage? The only test he failed, which was out of competition, was after taking a supplement. Romero presented the supplement to USADA. It was not labeled with what he failed for, however the supplement tested positive for the same substance. USADA bought a random package of the supplement, tested it, and it too contained the substance. Based on this, he only received a 6 month suspension.
LOL it's confirmed FACT. He's a deadbeat dad who defected while at an international competition in Germany and ran away with some German *****. Said he thinks his son would "understand." I'll give you the roid rage pejorative as "speculative." but if you've got working eyes and a brain you'll definitely conclude that he's probably done steroids over long stretches of his career as wrestler/fighter.
This content is protected Romero's cornerman is clearly trying to buy extra time by giving him water right as the bell is going, taking his sweet time to leave the cage and for the next round is going, even a UFC official is trying to push the guy off. Meanwhile a tired and hurt Romero looks to be buying as much extra time on the stool as he can. McCarthy just blew the call imo.
I haven't followed any of his back story. I like him as a fighter. I also like how some of his quotes about wrestling sound almost like I'm watching a martial arts movie, and the master in the film is making philosophical life and art comparisons. When he failed that test, I thought "of course he did." I get it. Still...He's looked that way his entire life, and has continued to train his entire life. He won gold in the '07 Pan Ams and made his MMA debut in '09. It's not like he turned into a couch potato in his late 20's and came back like a comic book character. I won't be shocked to see him, or any athlete, pop for steroids. Look at him. He has still passed years of International Olympic style testing, and he continues to pass during USADA. His performance hasn't dipped since USADA either. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Fair enough. I just don't like the guy and will root against him, don't deny his athletic accomplishments and ability overall.
I agree it was botched. It's not as bad as Rogan makes it sound. The corner man starts to leave at the official's urging. McCarthy is already addressing the Vaseline before the camera person is off the round card woman. My dislike for Romero was unwarranted in that situation.
