If you were to hype a boxer up, what would you say?

You’re a coach and your boxer is beat, down on the scorecards, and it’s the last round. What would you say to motivate him?

Do you want me to fight? Huh? Do you want me to trade places with you? Do you? Listen. This guy is finished. There comes a time in a man’s life when he makes a decision – to just live. Survive. Or he wants to win. You’re doing just enough to keep him off you. And hope he leaves you alone. You’re lying to yourself. You’re gonna cry tomorrow because of this. Do you want to cry tomorrow? Huh? Don’t lie to yourself. Back this guy up and fight a full round.

Most of me doubts that men and women in these moments even perceive "Rocky" moments. For example, while Leon Edwards was in the corner during his recent MMA comeback, his eyes were off in the audience and was clearly aloof as his coach made the "Rocky" speech but still produced the final round, come-from-behind KO anyway after not really following any specific instruction.

I can tell you I've seen 1,000 bull**** trainers pull the Teddy Atlas special trying to be a fake trainer for instagram, or just look cool shouting at their fighter. I definitely would not go into a 30 minute ridiculous diatribe about firefighters, fake call his wife, whatever. Atlas says he's some psychologist but he definitely doesn't understand how to manipulate psychology in the ring, just for viewers who want to enjoy a caricature (and I love some of his commentary work).

Directly and firmly get the attention with a name call, a quick chest slap, a "hey, look at me!" (so hard when someone is losing badly)
and say hey, here's the shot we're looking for, here's how we're going to get it, and put some volume on him (strategy)
Ignore all the past rounds and visualize the knockout in this very moment. Knockout. Bang. The new fight begins this very second and it ends in three minutes with you headed home, four pockets full of cash. (some light inspiration)
Come out fake patient, con the man for a second and then try to hit him as hard as you can and take his head clean off with your shot. I need to see you throw your best punch twenty times this round. (back to the strategy)
    And finally...
Remember that time your dad who you hate so much said you'd never be a fighter? I now agree with him if you lose. Your horrible father was right. You are a waste.

I think Moorer said it worked in the Evan Fields fight and he kissed Teddy afterwards. He also said he loved him.

I'd give him that minute to rest, I wouldn't berate him. He knows what he has to do, I'd let him know that he might be down on the scorecards and tell him to pull out this last round just in case. Then I'd tell him as I had been doing every round about anything I'd seen in his opponent that he could exploit. Nobody wants to lose (if the fighter doesn't care, there is nothing that will motivate him), the guy is going to do his best, the minute of rest is probably going to help him more than screaming at him.

I know you're tired and if you put everything you have into getting a KO, you'll be in physical pain for up to the next 3 minutes. If you don't, how long do think your emotional pain will last?

And on the other end, Lennox Lewis was behind on the cards against VK and it was clear he couldn't win via decision. Steward told him the only way he'd win was to get inside, get rough and dirty, knock him out, blah blah. Lewis then went out and stopped VK inside of a couple rounds, leaving VK looking like he'd got into a fight with a blender. It worked, he got Lewis to go from cautious boxer mode to seek and destroy mode.

    Sort of a Rocky moment.

We are firemen was pretty cool
Do you believe in magic was ok too.
I like the corner of Fernando Vargas:" wake up wake up wake UP pour some water on his balls!!!" From papa Garcia during the de la Hoya fight.

What about smooth Freddie Roach "ok your down in the cards son, you gotta knock this sunofabitch out ." James responds "****!" Then proceed s to knock down jirov and win the fight and the last round.

What about late great Manny steward? Lennox you gotta knock this mudafukka out! He's still dangerous! - talking about a shot Tyson lol.

There was a Rocky moment too in the Holyfield fight coming from ruizs corner too. Norman Stoney pulled it off as well

This is where the great trainers and motivators like Dundee/Stewart thrive. They get to know their fighters on a deeper more primal level and know what type of motivation gets the best out of each individual, or thereabouts. What riles them up, what motivates them? Why do they box? What do they fear most?

If it's a Larry Holmes, based on my readings of him, i'm zeroing in on that title, that belt, being the champ. That's what drove him as champion, the worst thing in the world to him at his peak was the thought of losing that belt.

If it was Hearns i'm zeroing in on him losing the chance of getting a rematch against the two that beat him, Leonard and Hagler.

So it depends. Everyone is different.
