If you were training a guy who had "raw talent"...

...in other words, a guy who never trained for boxing, but has athleticism, and knows the boxing basics (stance, how to move, ect.) simply from watching on TV...what would you do with the guy? Break him down, and teach him YOUR way, or work with - and try to improve - what he already has?

Teach him to go in only behind the jab, and end every combo on a jab or left hook.

Likewise, teach him to counter the jab effectively, either parry followed by a quick cross, or slip and counter. There's no more effective way to stop a fighter's offense than stopping it right at their jab.

Work on feints and unpredictability, make sure he doesn't make any movements that give away when he's gonna punch.

Teach him to slip punches WHILE keeping his hands up, never drop his hands, especially not on the way out like some fighters do.

Teach him to be a gangster like me.

I think you should always teach the boxers the core fundamentals of boxing, and build them individually based on that.. put simply. Every fighter has their own unique brand of boxing, not always smart to mimic another fighter

you didn't really answer the question...should the guy be allowed to retain his own style?

Oh you're right, bad reading on my part. I thought you meant, what would you do with him if you could do it your way.

To answer your question then: yes, I'd do it my way. But nothing's absolute. It depends on how good he picked up boxing from TV. I see guys come into my gym all the time who think they have it down, and they cant throw a proper punch, and lead with uppercuts. If he truly has good fundementals, work with what he has more. If he looks like an MMA fighter, redo him completely. But I still think sticking to what I said in my first post is how it should be done, and then you can add a little of his athleticism in there. Meaning, if he's truly fast, why not let him lead with the right sometimes.

I would make him watch hours of different fights of different great fighters and make him figure who he thought he was most like. Then I would tell him to break down that fighter and tell me how he would destroy that fighter. Then I would begin to teach him how to be greater than his new found idol and make him compete against his idol which is impossible, sending him on a mission to be the greatest that his imagination and drive will allow him to be.

I wish I had a son, he'd be the boxer I never got to be.

  8. I'm working on one of those myself.

Not your son, though. That'd be ****ing gay and biologically impossible.

:huh not sure if I'm being insulted, here...

  12. I'd teach the kid fundamentals but cater everything to his strengths and let him find his own style.

    This.
On style, what he prefers and what his natural ability is more suited for may be different. I would choose to train him based on his natural ability even if I have to break him first.

You can always try to have one. Or are you saying you can't have a son no more ever? I have a son. Don't get me wrong I love boxing good enough for him to take up as a serious hobby sport. But professionally as a career I'd rather not.

I don't want kids yet, but when I do, and if it's a boy... he is at least learning boxing as a recreational sport.
