Apparently not...and Lewis didn't have to use vulgarity or profanity...mainstays of today's sorry crop of "comedians".

:dealThis...Even more of a key to success to a modern "comedian"...a fart joke and at least the word "****" repeated in every line.

    Great clip. Thanks!

Don't see why it should make anyone angry, though. Just terrific banter between two legends.

I thought that was a really good little clip.
Not sure what the problem is. Cassius Clay was always quite equipped to hold his own, and Jerry was just stating exactly what most seasoned sports writers were saying about Clay when he said "bag of wind" and "Barnum". Is it better to do it in the sports pages rather than tell it to his face ?
Nobody thought Clay would be around for much long, just a 'novelty act' whose time in the limelight was coming to an end, a bit like what people thought about Fury a couple of months ago.

Clay proved them all wrong, as we know.
Jerry Lewis, an arrogant a-hole ? yes, probably. Not the first nor last chat show host and comedian to project such a persona.

I think people like Jerry Lewis telling Clay he was a bag of wind would have only helped spur him on to become as great as he did.

As Saad54 said, people were thicker skinned back then.
Ali did say some bad things in his time, but no one cried about it because people had a sense of perspective in those days.

Yeah it was a different time. Plus it's not like Ali was saying that stuff and they just had to sit there and live with it. They got a chance to punch Ali in the face. It wasn't a jackie robinson situation where Liston or crazier weren't allowed to do anything.

Considering how Ali's shtick at the time was taunting and ridiculing his opponents, sometimes in a cruel fashion, I don't see anything wrong with this interview. Both Lewis and "Clay" handled it well and the audience seemed to enjoy it.

As others have mentioned though, I wonder how such an interview would be accepted today. I can see the faux outrage such as "How dare this comedian treat this African American in such a condescending manner by violating his safe zone!"
