This will be on the Bey vs. Shafikov undercard in Macao on July 18th. Both unbeaten contenders, hailing from half the world apart from each other, are coming off IBF eliminators and will vie here for the 140lb belt vacated by Lamont Peterson. Pretty interesting match-up for a variety of reasons. Yang and Cuenca are polar opposites in a multitude of ways. Their homes are 12k mi apart - literally half the earth's circumference. One is a southpaw veteran of 13 years entering his fiftieth bout; the other is right-handed and just in his twenty-first. Cuenca has just 4% of his victories by stoppage, while Yang has three quarters of his own.
I head literally never heard of Ik Yang until before the fight. Thats the first time a world title challenger north of 122 has done that to me in about a decade.
This will apparently be the min event. I'm going Yang, the guy is a potential gateway star for Chinese boxing
Wow, that means he is not only getting top billing over Bey vs. Shafikov (a non-vacant world title bout, although Bey shouldn't be champ as we all know) but also Brian Viloria, scheduled to face TBA.
Donaire is suppose to be on that card as well. He's facing Anthony Settoul, so its not a major fight, but a lot of names on that card and Yang is getting main event billing.
I remember that now, explains why his name rang a bell when I saw it. Big Dan says it's most likely going to be Settoul and Top Rank is pulling Donaire out of the purse bid with Ruiz. Seems they are going to target Quigg or Frampton instead.
Picking Yang, but the odds on Cuenca ain't bad :think http://www.oddschecker.com/boxing/ik-yang-v-cesar-rene-cuenca/winner
I kinda feel dumb now, I didn't know either guy before having to pick on this fight for the league, so just watched some footage and went with Cuenca... and now Im seeing that the majority of people seem to think Yang will take this. I feel like switching my pick, especially since the fight is in Yangs turf, Yang looks slightly bigger, and Cuenca lacks the power to take the judges out of the equation. Younger, Power Puncher, home field advantage and possible size advantage.... hard to go against Yang here. Maybe I will rewatch them fight, I just think Cuenca seems to be on a slightly higher level, but I could def be wrong here. Will watch more clips later
