Byrd protested the stoppage. I said its very possible, not that it would have happened. Byrd was stopped on the ropes, have you seen the fight? He slipped like 90% of Ike's barrage and the ref stopped it. This content is protected I think you are confused. Hell, even HBO thought Tua won and they were pretty biased towards Ike. It wasn't a clear win for Ike in any way shape or form. He faded in the closing rounds for one. Nobody knocks ike on here for his performance because he's pretty overrated. You'll find people on here commonly claiming that he could beat Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, and Liston easily.
HBO biased for Ike? What are you smoking?? Larry Merchant even admits during the fight that he had never heard of Ike Ibeabuchi hahahaba
A man who flattened Byrd with one punch and stood toe to toe with the best version if David Tua is unproven? Ike wins inside of 5 rounds. I'd bet three months mortgage he would.
Mr.DagoWop said: ↑ He didn't beat Tua imo and according to a lot of people, me included. A very unconvincing win. Ibeabuchi profited from being a well liked fighter. He lost all but one of the rounds against Byrd and Byrd could have continued had the ref not stopped it. It's very possible that Byrd could have won a decision had he been allowed to continue. The guy is supposed to be a world class puncher but this is only based upon a dodgy stoppage against Byrd. Wilder has dominated his opponents in a way Ibeabuchi never came close to. Thanks Mike. We have a few silly posters here. I have not seen you post before. Stick around, there is some good stuff here. You're 100% right on your comments.
It's common knowledge. I was really into heavyweight boxing back then but even some casuals were beginning to hear about Tua. He was being hyped like the second coming of Tyson or something (by Duva and others). Ibeabuchi was an unknown African guy who was training in Dallas with Curtis Cokes. As for evidence though, it should be pretty obvious in the fight and prefight commentary.
Byrd won the first round and arguably lost the rest. I don't see how that's a controversial scorecard. In any event, HBO might have been partial to Ike's style over that of Chris Byrd (who Merchant was extremely biased against) but that fight was a year and a half after Ike had his coming out party against Tua.
I had Ike taking all the rounds beyond the first. Byrd rolled well with shots and it didn't take Ike long to figure out his rhythm. He had hooks waiting for Byrd at every turn and the end result wasn't long coming. From what Ive seen from both men , I'd favour Ike to chop Wilder down in the mid rounds.
