This is probably the most exciting 12 round non-world title heavyweight fight I've ever seen that went the distance. What do you think? I've uploaded the fight to my (free) channel, so if anyone hasn't already seen it, they can watch it now. There is a downside to this fight - Ibeabuchi's mother claimed her son's mental health/criminal behaviour problems started after this scrap. When you see the damage they inflicted on each other, it's easy to believe it had a permanent impact on both guys. This content is protected
It was a good fight but I always thought it lacked drama it was very one paced with no stand out rounds. Off the top of my head Ruddock vs Tyson 2 was a more enjoyable 12 round Heavyweight non title fight. I also enjoyed Norton vs Ali 2 one of my favourite Ali fights in the 70s. Mercer vs Cooper is also another good candidate for a 12 round non title fight.
Mercer / Cooper was a tremendous fight and I personally think Bert had some of the fight knocked permanently out of him by it.
Look, there have been many great fights but this was a heavyweight classic right up there w Bowe-Holyfield 1 ... best is personal choice but it was a great fight ...
I agree re Tua vs Ibeabuchi. It almost seems wrong to say because it was a great fight but it did lack a certain measure of drama - they were just like two, punch for punch, unyielding Rock’em Sock’em Robots. One irony is that they both had such great chins - one fighter or the other being wobbled or hurt definitely adds drama - those two were like brick walls, taking the very best the other could dish out without any real problems or taking any backward steps.
There were more punches thrown & landed in the 12 round Ike/Tua fight than in any 15 round Ali /Frazier fight
It was a great fight that most heavyweights could not handle the pace or brutal punching ....these two guys fought on equal terms trading bombs relentlessly...the lack of drama was simply neither could overpower the other
My top 10 heavyweight non title 12 rounders (that went 12 otherwise add cooper vs moorer and bowe holyfield 3 among others) Cooper vs mercer Ali vs norton Ibeabuchi vs tua Patterson vs chuvalo Patterson vs quarry 2 Holmes vs mercer Wladimir klitchko vs peter 1 Young vs foreman Whyte vs chisora 1 Tyson vs ruddock 2 Ali vs frazier 2
And ? Zack Padilla broke punchstats records when he fought Ray Oliveira, Chris Arreola recently fought a fight that broke Heavyweight punchstat record that Tua/Ibeabuchi held. It doesn't mean these fights are better than other famous great fights. Tua/Ibeabuchi lacked drama and there was no stand out round, a good fight but not a great one for me.
