And add in that woefull workrate of Ruddock's. Man, the guy would work for about 25 seconds a round and that's when he really looked like something. But he could take off parts of rounds and just disappear. And he sure didn't ever seem like a guy that ever seemed to fight smart. He'd have an awful hard time dealing with that Ibeabuchi workrate.
Part of the reason Ruddock didnt do jack against Tyson was due to Tyson relentless body attack. Id pick Ike though, due to workrate and better tools
There was no relentless body attack in the Ruddock/Tyson fights outside of the ball shots, especially the remach where Mike was head hunting even moreso than usual...I swear everytime I read that claim I'm wandering if people are watching Frazier/Mathis instead. Had Mike commited to the body instead of wild lunging and accepting hte clinch, he probably would have put Ruddock away more convincingly in both matches. At any rate, Ike takes the decision with his volume jabbing, the punch stats will be heavily in his favor and Ruddock has to make at least one trip to the canvas or it just isn't a Ruddock fight. Ike is largely untested, but as the Tua fight shown, waiting and throwing one big wind up at a time don't seem like the way to go.
Ok maybe relentless was a strong word, but Tyson did hit Ruddock with more bodyshots than hes hit anyone, i can always post the highlights of the fight for people. Also something which seems to be ignored is that yes Ruddock was knocked out by Lewis early, but you have to take into account that he also took 19 rounds of heavy punishment from Mike Tyson, thats hardly going to be good for your health. Ali was reportedly pissing blood after 8 rounds with Foreman, but Ruddock is supposed to be fine after 19 rounds with Tyson? How would Ike react to a smash from Ruddock? someone posted earlier that Tua hits harder than Ruddock, is there any way they could back this claim up? Im still picking Ike based on workrate. Look at how Ike fought Tua and how Ruddock fought Tyson
I believe Tyson couldn't finish Ruddock when he hurt him early because he was sloppy and got tied up easily. Everytime Ruddock got dropped or hurt by a big shot, he was just able to grab Mike and hug him until he found his feet again. Mike's best punches were usually lunging hooks over the top, either off counters or Ruddock getting caught staring into space with his guard down( a bad habit of his). Lewis finished Ruddock early because he was too big and aggressive to be tied up like that. In the second round, Ruddock was trying to grab Lewis like he did Tyson, but just got pushed back and hammered for his trouble. I don't put much stock into the Tyson ruined Ruddock claims or vise versa. Just seems like an excuse that isn't necessary. Even if he went to the body more being smallish, Mike is just going to have a harder time against a tall heavy wrestler like Ruddock than a big guy like Lewis.
Thats true, a lot of Tysons punches were just hooks lunging in, whereas Lennox employed straight right hands. Ruddock, imo, must be one of the dumbest fighters ever. I dont know who was dumber, Ruddocks gameplan against tyson, or Tysons against Holyfield in trhe first fight.
