Look there is no question Byrd was hurt in Round 5 on that knockdown. I mean he got the spit knocked out of his mouth. He really got rocked good. the ref could have stopped it there and nobody would have complained but he didn't. Byrd beat the count and the ref allowed him to continue. Guys have got up and won fights after brutal shots, look at Holmes against Shavers..etc.. Byrd falling over the second time did him no favors but the ref let it continue. There was only 12 seconds left when the ref let them continue once more. Ike swarmed, he got a right hand in, but everything else missed quite widely, Byrd was slipping it all while yelling at the ref not to step in and stop it. You can hear the 5 second warning knock. The ref jumps in as Byrd slips two left hooks. Why jump in with 5 seconds when Byrd is not getting hit, looking you in the face and saying I'm okay. You can hear the crowd booing it. Byrd was outboxing Ike prior to that and deserved a chance to make it out of the round and evaluate. So that's Ike's best win and my take on it. Too bad there wasn't a rematch, I think Byrd could have avenged this loss. He was too cocky here and showboating, but he was trying to make an impression on the judges as defensive fighters have to do.
He knocks Byrd stupid 7 days a week. Hed look good for a few rounds if they fought 10 times, but he gets crushed eventually !
Dealing in the realm of reality. Byrd looked good in 5/5 rounds against Ike, so I can't agree. Ike scored with one great monsterous punch, and I believe the stoppage was premature, so I don't believe Byrd was crushed in their one incident.
I agree he was doing well, but he was never gonna keep the president off him for long. That's what I said, he'll always look good until Ike caught up with him !
My point was Ike couldn't catch up with him after Byrd got badly rocked, the match closed with him missing at least 4 straight punches pretty widely, Byrd was in control enough to dodge punches while yelling at the ref to not step in. If Byrd was given those 5 seconds, he could theoretically have got back into the match after a rest. He was very coherent in the post fight and laughed at the footage of himself getting caught with the uppercut. Byrd got caught goofing off, he was smiling and playing on the ropes. I don't think it's a sure fire repeatable scenario. And Ike was getting winded after the 3rd round, swinging and missing against Byrd is a bit different than using Tua as a workout bag. I'm not ruling out possibility Ike catches him again, but I think Byrd deserves benefit of the doubt. The way he came back from that knockdown was impressive, he earned a shot at continuing the fight.
